Roger Glen Swartzbaugh

Roger Glen Swartzbaugh, 72, of Springfield, IL, formerly of Canton, IL, died on Friday, May 19, 2024, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on January 11, 1952, at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL; a son of Donald C. and Constance H. (Jones) Swartzbaugh. They preceded him in death.


On May 3, 1986, Roger married Nancy Brown at St Peter’s Episcopal Church in Canton, IL. She is surviving.

Also surviving Roger is one brother, John (Judy) Swartzbaugh of Mexico; one nephew, Adam (Chana) Swartzbaugh of New Orleans, LA, and several cousins.


Roger graduated from Canton High School, and also from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, where he had majored in History. He moved on to receive his master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and then completed teaching credentials through Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.


Roger was the Medical Reference Librarian for St John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL, for nearly 29 years. He was previously a librarian, and taught at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL. Before achieving those accomplishments, Roger was employed by the state of Illinois as a Driver’s License Examiner, right here in Canton.


And that’s not all; Roger, along with his mother, Constance H., authored “The Swartzbaugh Family in America 1749-1984.” He was still drafting “The Jones Family Genealogy” at the time of his death.


He was a past member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Canton, and an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and of Fighting Illini Basketball.


Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Fiatt Cemetery. The Reverend Dante’ Anglin will officiate. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society. To leave online condolences please visit www.sedgwickfuneralhomes.com
