He was born March 16, 1941 to Moreland and Dorothy (Steagall) Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Harold Rawley, stepbrother, Cecil, brother, Donnie Mitchell as well as cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Singleton of Wyoming, IL, Amy Mitchell of Macomb, brothers, Paul Mitchell of Lincoln, IL, Thomas Mitchell of Florida, Richard (Jessica) Mitchell of Pekin, IL, Steven (Martha) Mitchell of Norris, grandsons, Tyler Singleton of Wyoming, IL, Riley Singleton of East Peoria, Nathan Nigh and Tristan Nigh both of Melrose, IA.
James was briefly in in the Air Force at a young age. He was a lifelong resident of Norris and worked at Caterpillar in East Peoria until retirement. In his off time, he played in many bands, entertaining in a lot of local towns with his musical talents. He loved wearing his cowboy boots and blue jeans. He loved country music as well as classic rock. James was a go getter and never hesitated to say what was on his mind. He loved going to his favorite restaurants in Canton for breakfast. He liked to go shopping of a morning and would quote he didn’t like being in Walmart at noon, that’s when the crazy people come out. James had a smile you couldn’t forget and a deep love for his daughters.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 2pm at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a visitation 1 hour prior.
Burial will follow at the Orendorff Cemetery in rural Canton.
