He was born in Peoria, to Edward “Ed” and Margaret “Peggy” (Thompson) Smith. They preceded him in death.
Dan married Margaret “Maggie” (Hamilton) Smith on June 12, 2011. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2023.
He is survived by two step children, Jeannie (Dauquan Terry) Hamilton, and Naomi (Jason) Carson, three siblings, Regina Burgett, Coral (David) Nichols, and Jim Bush, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and his three cats, Princess, Squeaks, and Furby.
Dan is a graduate of Farmington High school with the class of 1988, where he was the basketball manager. He first worked at Kersh’s Café, and also mowed yards for over 40 years. He then delivered newspapers for 30 years for the Canton Daily Ledger. Lastly Dan enjoyed starting and helping his niece Amanda and her husband Taurean with operating their party business H & A Party Rentals LLC. Dan is a member of the Bethesda Pentecostal Church in Pekin. He was a pet lover, and an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He also loved to go fishing, Kayaking, and walking.
Cremation rites will be accorded and a memorial service will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton at 4:00 p.m. visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made in his name for his benefit, Game Night with Uncle Dan, help on September 7, 2025 at the Canton Elk’s Lodge #626, from 1:00 pm. until 6:00 p.m.
