Janet R. McCaughey

Janet (Rose) McCaughey of Canton, IL, was born January 12, 1934, to Robert E .and Zelma (Thompson) Rose in Canton, IL and passed away on July 4, 2025. She married James H. McCaughey on December 21, 1952, in Canton and lived in Key West, Florida and Long Beach, California while Jim served in the U. S. Navy. They settled in Cuba, Illinois, eventually moving to Canton and Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills. After 55 years of marriage, Jim passed in 2008. Janet is survived by two sons, James R. of Cape Coral, FL, and Timothy P. (Carol) of Springfield, IL. Janet has four grandchildren, Colette (Michael) Smith of Murphysboro, IL, Carlyn (Nathan) Graumenz of Highland, IL., Nathan Strange and Caitlin McCaughey of Springfield, IL. She has eight great grandchildren, Ayla and Landon Smith, Cloe and Josie Graumenz, Lily, Carter, and Lilah Strange, Cash Wolff. Carol’s sons, Ryne Pfeifer and Kyle (Dafne) Pfeifer and their children, Logan and Isabella Pfeifer. Janet is also survived by two sisters, Joan Morton of Freeport, IL, and Mary K. Stoufer of Alexandria, VA, one brother-in- law, Ed Tomkins of Sun City, AZ, sister-in-law, Barbara McCaughey, Glendale, AZ., and many nieces and nephews. She stayed very close to her sons and sisters, with whom she and her husband and brothers-in-law traveled to many interesting places. She also had a special bond with high school friends, including a lifelong friendship with Harriet Juliusson, and Ellen Smith.


Janet was a 45-year-old member of Lambda Chi Omega, Tau Chapter, Philanthropic sorority, and a member of the Graham Hospital Service League. She worked in the gift shop, served as a board member on the Ways and Means Committee, and as a gift shop buyer. She was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher in her younger years. She also was a past member of the Cuba Junior Women’s Club. She loved playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs.


Janet retired after 20 years as an executive secretary at Illinois River Correctional Center, Department of Corrections and had worked in the office at Wee-Ma-Tuk Country Club for 18 years, filling in wherever needed while Jim was the manager. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The interment of ashes will be with her husband in Baughman Cemetery in Smithfield, IL. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or Graham Hospital Service League. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
