Shirley J. High

Shirley J. High, 81, of Hartford City, Indiana, formerly of Havana, passed away at University Nursing Center in Upland, Indiana, at 6:27 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022. She was born March 11, 1941, in Fayette County, Illinois, to Wayne William and Emma Elizabeth (Blankenship) Rhodes. She married Charles J. High in Vandalia, Illinois, on April 28, 1958. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2005.


Mrs. High is survived by seven children: Rev. Steven (Laura) High, of Hartford City, Indiana, Roger High, of Havana, Rev. James (Jan) High of Eaton, Ohio, Michael (Melanie) High of Germantown Hills, Illinois, Jerry (Julie) High of Orangeville, Illinois, Tracy (John) Aurand of Salem, Illinois, Laura (Steven) Barras of Allen, Louisiana; nineteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and ten siblings: Truman Rhodes, Elvy Rhodes, Carl Rhodes, Ennis “Bud” Rhodes, Delight Callaway, Joyce Hicks, Carl Rhodes, Larry Rhodes, Dennis Rhodes, and Steven Rhodes.

Mrs. High was a member of the Havana Church of the Nazarene. She was an avid seamstress who was skilled at making wedding dresses. She was very proud to have earned one of the highest scores in her county when taking the G.E.D. For several years, she owned and operated he own catering business.

Funeral services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home, in Havana, on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 3:00 p.m., with visitation two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow the services at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Rev. Steven High will officiate.
