Gary B. Gunther


Smithfield – Gary B. Gunther, 74, of Smithfield, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday September 12, 2017 at his residence. He was born on May 25, 1943 in Galesburg, IL to Gene and Lois (Hansen) Gunther. He married Deborah Travis in 1985 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Canton. She preceded him in death in 2012.

Also preceding him in death are his parents, and one sister, Linda Gunther.

 Surviving are two daughters, Kari (Karsten) Pukropski of Conroe, Texas, Nichole (Dennis) Dunphy of Smithfield, IL; two sons, Jon Gunther of Aurora, IL, and Tod Gunther; eight grandchildren, Hunter Lew (Emily) Warner, Samantha Gunther, Jon Gunther Jr., Christian Gunther, Tod Gunther Jr., Brittany Gunther, Dennis Logan Dunphy, Hayden Dunphy; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Gary was a retired construction worker, active minister in the Canton prison chapel system, a native American artifact collector, and also an avid hunter, sportsman, and a deep-sea fisherman.

Gary served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, an accommodated Navy EOD Frogman.

Services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL, where a visitation will be held from 12 – 2 PM. Rev. Mike Arnett will officiate. Burial will follow the services at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, IL with military honors. Memorials can be made to Wounded Warrior Project or National Wild Turkey Federation.
