Shirley Herbert

 
London Mills - Shirley Felice Herbert, 92, of rural London Mills, died at Red Oak Memory Care in Canton, Illinois on August 22, 2017
Shirley was born February 5, 1925 in Cuba, Illinois to Starlie LaVerne Phillips, Sr. and Jessie Marie (Stimeling) Phillips.
On March 29, 1949, Shirley married her high school sweetheart. John Harrison Herbert, in Canton, Illinois, He preceded her in death on November 20, 2003
She is survived by her daughters Cynthia (Steve) Halsey, London Mills, IL and Sharon (Butch) Howarth, Petersburg, IL.
Also surviving are grandchildren: Emily (Todd) Johnson, Canton, IL, Sarah (Benjamin) Holmes, Decatur, IL, Major Nathan Howarth, San Angelo, TX (currently serving at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan) and Allison (Joe) Boenish, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Also surviving is great-granddaughter, Tesse Marie Boenish.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Starlie Laverne Phillips, Jr.
After graduating from Cuba high School in 1942, Shirley worked as a secretary at the draft board in Lewistown and at CIPS in Canton. Shortly after he marriage to John, the Newlyweds moved to Tacoma, Washington where John was stationed in the Army and she worked at the base hospital as a secretary. Upon John’s discharge from the Army, the couple moved to their farm north of Fairview where Shirley delighted in being a farm wife, homemaker and mother to their two daughter. Later in their lives, John and Shirley enjoyed spending winters at the second home in Fort Myers, FL.
Shirley was a member of the Fairview Reform Church where she was active in the women’s Guild and loved teaching Sunday School to kindergartners for over 30 years. She also was a member of the Fairview Women’s Club and Friendly Circle Club.
Shirley enjoyed playing bridge, collecting antiques, entertaining, cooking, traveling, and studying the Bible. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends whom she cherished so much.
The family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff at Red Oak Estates and Memory Car for their friendship and wonderful care of their mother and grandmother.
Private graveside service will be held at the Cuba Cemetery, in Cuba, Illinois
