Robert B. Howell, Sr.

Robert B. Howell Sr., 87, of Canton, passed away at 6:16 PM on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 18, 1937 in Salem Township on the Howell Farm, a son of William Jennings Bryan and Angela Elidia (Maffini) Howell. He married Donna Jean Stapleton on February 8, 1958 at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Farmington. She survives at home with her two great grandsons.




He is also survived by three children, Valerie (Tim) Schultz, Robert (Cindy) Howell Jr., and Celeste (Robbie Owen) Crouse; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Carolyn.




He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Nunes, and nephew, John.




Robert worked on the Howell farm at early age, and later helped build the Norris fire house, and several homes, when he worked at Dumler Lumber, also Dumler owned the bowling alley, so Robert bartended at the Bowling alley, then he went to work at Caterpillar where he was electrocuted. After recovering, he then worked for Keystone for 30 years. Before retiring, he was injured from falling from a scaffolding, about 50 feet, and broke his neck and back. He was a member of the Canton Moose and the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, mushrooming and loved his three children, and later on in years his love for his grandchildren, which they were a big part of his life. He also enjoyed playing cards, pool, and visiting with friends at Billy’s Tap and White Oaks Bar.




Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Funeral Services will be immediately following the visitation, from 12:00 PM until about 1:00 PM. Monsignor Timothy Nolan will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded after the conclusion of services through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry.
