Dorothy Alice Canevit

Dorothy Alice Canevit, age 92, of Fairview, IL, passed away at 11:12 AM on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at her home surrounded by loved ones.

She was born, April 4, 1932, in Macomb, IL to Harvey and Pearl (Johnson) Simpson. She married Edward Canevit on July 2, 1955 in Canton, IL. They proceeded her in death.

She is survived by five children, Michael Edward (Debbie) Canevit of Fairview, IL, Mark Allen (Angela) Canevit, of Tempe, AZ, Matthew Jay (Patricia) Canevit, of Canton, IL, Cindy Canevit, of Clarksville, TN, and Connie Alice (James) Meyers, of Hoover, AL. She has 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

She was the last surviving of 10 siblings, Louis, Carl, Wayne, Leroy, Robert, Mildred Winship, Helen Elliott, Joan Smith, and Betty Cernich, all of whom she loved and adored. She instilled that tight family bond in us and taught us to always be there for each other, as she was with her siblings.

She was a homemaker first, but worked hard cleaning the homes of many families and businesses in Canton. She had a love for gospel music and played the piano in their band, “Buggy Wheel Opry”, alongside her husband, who played the drums. They loved their life of “gigging”. She especially loved it when they played with her brothers, who played the fiddle.

She was a seamstress, who loved making baby quilts as gifts, but also made many clothes. She was a master at turning trash into treasure. She refinished furniture, reupholstered furniture, and wallpapered many homes. She loved gardening and loved nurturing her plants and flowers, especially her roses. She was a book of knowledge and remembered details about the seemingly minor events in her life.

She was an active member of the Maples Mills Methodist Church for many years and loved everybody she met.

A special thank you to the men and women of Compassus Hospice. Their help and support were a Godsend for our family during these trying times.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held in Illinois to be announced at a later date. Cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital. To leave online condolences please visit www.sedgwickfuneralhomes.com.
