Mary Margaret Wilkinson


Mary Margaret (Cardot) Wilkinson (82) of Canton, IL joined Jesus on Sunday December 15, 2024 with her husband by her side.

She was born May 18, 1942 in Canton, to Clifford and Jean (Brush) Cardot. She married Donald W. Wilkinson on September 27, 1968 in Canton, IL, and together they raised four children, John (Kathy) Lafferty, Annette Lafferty, Brian (Danette) Wilkinson, and Christopher (Nicci) Wilkinson. Mary is survived by her husband Don, their children, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, her sisters Anita Heaton, Camille Plunk, Carol Wages, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Cathy Parkinson and Marty Hopkins. She was a 1960 graduate of Canton high school and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church where she taught CCD for several years. She also served as everyone's favorite lunch lady, at Ingersoll Middle School. She retired in 2004 from the Canton Police Department where she was a dispatcher for 16 years. Mary was known and loved for her quick wit and sense of humor. Her biggest joy in life was spending time with her family. She enjoyed spending time with her 5 sisters over the years and their get-togethers. The family would like to thank the staff at The Loft in Canton and Dawn Giacabazi and staff of Serenity Point Hospice for the kindness and care you provided. Cremation rites have been accorded through Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Carroll Draughan

Carroll P. Draughan, 60, of Canton, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024 in Canton.

He was born on February 22, 1964 in Macomb to Frank and Patricia (Self) Draughan. They preceded him in death.

He married Teresa VanMiddlesworth on July 23, 1983 in Prairie City. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Staci (Bill) Lewallen of Bushnell, Levi (Jordan) Draughan of Canton, Harli (Jake Kuenzl) Draughan of Fairview, one brother, Mike (Susan Hoover) Draughan of Bushnell, Connie (Steve Henson) Chambers of Canton, one grandchild, Carson Kuenzl, sister-in-law, Janet Draughan of Bushnell and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Harv Draughan, sister, Sue (Terry) Rhoads and grandsons, Jude and Chance Lamb.

Carroll moved to Canton to become the Manager of the IGA Food Store. He was a local businessman lastly becoming the owner and operator of The Barn Sales and 5th Ave Tires and Auto both in Canton. He enjoyed collecting Hot Rods and Harley Davidson Motorcycles and recently bought a drag car fulfilling his dream of running down the drag strip. He loved his faithful dogs, T.J. and Digger.

A visitation will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024 from 4-7pm at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral Service will follow on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 2pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fiatt Cemetery.

Harvey Johnson, Jr.

Harvey Johnson Jr., 81, of Canton, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, December, 15th 2024 at 11:00 AM. Harvey was born in Canton, Illinois on May 10th 1943. Harvey is proceeded in death by his father Harvey Johnson, Sr. and his mother Barbara (Whiteman) Johnson. Harvey married Mary (Oldham) Johnson on April 12th, 1965 in Canton, Illinois. Mary proceeds Harvey in death.


He is also preceded in death by three sisters.


Harvey Johnson, Jr. is survived by his beloved children; Harvey (Cynthia) Johnson, III., Judith Johnson, Thomas Johnson and Nicholas (Shellie) Johnson. Grandchildren; Brock (Heather) Long , Trenton (Amber) Long, Jackson Johnson, Etaliana Johnson, Ezabella Johnson, Hope Johnson, and Haven Johnson. Great-grandchildren; Davina Long, Vivian Long, Dean Long, Carter Long, Mason Long, and Elizabeth Long. Siblings; Larry “Rick” (Rhonda) Johnson, Daniel (Sheryl) Johnson, James Johnson, Barbra “Bobi” (Woody) Moore, Luellen “Ellie” Vaughn, Melannie (Doug) Jallas, and proceeded in death; Christina Stevens, Mellissa (Roger) Arnett, and Cheryle (Larry) Nebergall.


Harvey Johnson Jr. attended Lewistown High School and finished his GED while in the ARMY. Harvey worked for Allied Mills for 18 years, security services INC for 10 years, and eventually retired in 2012 from Aventine security. Harvey was a member of Canton Elks 626 for 20 years and a member of the American Legion in Lewistown. Harvey served in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968.


Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Friday December 20, 2024 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Service will be held at 2:00 PM the same day. Rev. Roselin Louise Groff Morris

Roselin Louise Groff Morris, 84 of Odessa, Texas, passed away at 12:24 AM on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. She was born on October 25, 1940, a daughter of Robert Munson, whom preceded her in death.


Also preceding Roselin in death is her son, Howard Clayton Groff, and brother Robert Bobby Munson.


Surviving Roselin is her children, David Groff, Debbie Groff Love, and Julie Conerly, all of Texas, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and brother, James Munson of Iowa.


She worked several years in the Restaurant Business.


Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:45 AM on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Ipava Cemetery. Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate. Jarred E. “Oger” Kosowski

Jarred E. “Oger” Kosowski, 46, of Yates City, passed away at 7:23 PM on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Pekin Hospital. He was born on September 29, 1978 in Peoria, IL, to Richard and Vicki (Mayne) Kosowski. He married Sheri Stanley on May 28, 2006 at the Farmington United Methodist Church in Farmington. She survives.


He is also survived by his parents; two sons, Lucas and Lee Kosowski; one brother, Chris (Katie Mottaz) Kosowski; nephew, Wyatt Kosowski; two step-daughters, Nicole (Ryan) Cremeens and Ashley Fromm; three grandchildren, Christian, Rhys, and Elliott.


He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Waldylsaw “Walter” and Janina Kosowski and maternal grandparents, Paul and Hazel Mayne.


Jarred worked as an insurance salesman for Tom Conklin- State Farm Insurance. He was also an auxiliary police officer in Farmington, IL. He was a member of the Rotary Club. Jarred was a very passionate hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed teaching hunting safety courses. He was also a treasurer for Elmwood Trap Club.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Bruce W. VanClief

Bruce Willis VanClief, 77, of Glasford, formerly of Orange Park, Florida, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born on September 8, 1947 in Parkersburg, W.V. to Robert and F. Irene (Pine) VanClief.

He married Linda Stephens on August 3, 1978 in Jacksonville, FL. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Lisa (David) Bergevin of Canton, IL, Daniel (Tiffany Bowden) VanClief of Hillard, FL, one sister, Nancy VanClief of Shawboro, N.C., five grandchildren, Hannah (Emily) Bergevin, Sophia (Kyle) Bergevin and Ashley, Jessica and Morgan VanClief along with five great grandchildren, Ryleigh, Skyla, Raine, Indra and Jameson. His niece Tracy VanClief and great niece, Amanda (Tyler) McNeil also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Norman.

Bruce served as a machinist in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was the owner and operator of Southern Machine and Fabrication in Jacksonville, FL. He made custom Hot Rod parts in his shop called Past Time’s Hot Rods. He enjoyed traveling to his favorite show Shades of the Past in Pigeon Forge with his family selling his parts. He also liked carving tikis from palm trees and all things plants and landscaping.

Cremation rites have been accorded through Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. A celebration of his life will be held in the Spring in Florida.

Sharon K. Schrodt

Sharon K. Schrodt, 81, of Trivoli, passed away on December 9, 2024 at her residence. She was born on September 19, 1943 in Canton to Robert and Virginia (Mitchell) Siedel. Sharon married the love of her life, Russell Schrodt on December 26, 1964. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2012. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother Jack Siedel.

Surviving are two children; Deana (Bryan) Wolf of Mt. Vernon, OH and Kevin Schrodt of Trivoli, six grandchildren; Hannah (Gonzalo) Torres, Molly Wolf, Sam Wolf, Lilly Wolf, Sophia Wolf and Annalia Wolf and two great-granddaughters; Hazel Torres and Margot Torres.

Sharon graduated from Graham Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from Graham Hospital as an (RN-CNOR) after many years. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and later at First Christian Church in Canton. Sharon loved quilting, watching Duke basketball and supporting and watching her son, Kevin, race.

Services will be 11 am, Monday, December 23, 2024 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton, where visitation will be 1 hour prior to services. Curtis T. Norton

Curtis T. Norton, 72, of Canton, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at his home.

He was born in Canton, on June 20, 1952, to Roland Norton and Ellyn (Whitehead).

He married Janet (Hopwood) Norton in 1985. She preceded him in death in August of 2024. He is also preceded in death by his brother Joseph (Doris) Norton.

Curt is survived by two sons, Jason (Samantha) Norton, and Aaron (Star) Norton, two step daughters, Angie (Blair) Ackman, and Jennifer (Steve) Kohlbrecher, and eight grandchildren, Curtis, Bailey, Joseph, Maggie (Tristin), Cole (Shelby), Paige, Carter and Bennett.

Curt retired as a strong union brother to IBEW LU 34 Electrical union. He was active on the executive board for IBEW LU 34 and he dedicated over 20 years on the apprenticeship board to help new electricians in the union. He was also a proud member of the HAVANA 40.

Curt was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed showing his family his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed crappie fishing, duck, squirrel, and morel mushroom hunting.

A memorial service will be held on Monday December 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.

A burial of Curtis and Janet’s ashes will be held immediately following the services at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Following the burial a celebration of life for Curt will be held at the Canton American Legion Post 16 starting at 5:00 p.m. where he frequented often.

Harold E. Chasteen

Harold E. Chasteen, 79, of Lewistown, passed away, Thursday, December 5, 2024.

He was born in Canton on June 4, 1945, to Leo “Harold” E., and Velda F. (Robbins) Chasteen. They preceded him in death.

Harold married Christine (Columbia) on August 3, 1972. They shared 44 years of marriage until she passed away on March, 19, 2017.

He is also preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Monty Chasteen, one sister, Malvina, and one brother, Richard Chasteen.

He is survived by three children, Joseph “Joe” (Lori) Almasi of Iowa, Angela (Jean Kueter) Almasi of Iowa, and Martin “Marty” Chasteen, one brother, Lester “Frankie” (Linda) Chasteen, sister-in-law, Suzanne (Jim) Humphrey, nine grandchildren, Kaylie Chasteen, Paige (David) Freeze, Jordyn (Hunter) Rhodes, Nick Almasi, Taylor Chasteen, Heath (Ailis McCradle) Nichols, Rane Nichols, Kent Nichols, and Trenton Chasteen, and 15 great grandchildren,

Harold was part of the steamfitter Local 353 in Peoria for 48 years. He retired in 2004. He later worked at New Horizons School in Lewistown.

He is a Veteran of the United States Army serving from 1963 until 1969. He is a Master Mason. He was part of the Farmington Masonic Lodge, as well as the Lewistown American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Most of all Harold enjoyed spending time with his family.

Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be held at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton on Saturday, February 1, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A celebration of life will immediately follow at the Canton VFW.

Louis A. “Louie” Maddox

Louis A. “Louie” Maddox, 87, of Lewistown, formerly of Morton, passed away, Monday, December 9, 2024 surrounded by his family at his daughter’s home.

He was born in Peoria on March 27, 1937, to Elmer and Florence (Hersey) Maddox. They preceded him in death.

Louie is survived by six children, Mike (Suzie) Maddox, Ken (Diane) Maddox, Laurie (the late Joseph) Plecki, Julie Moore, Jeff Maddox, and Leigh Ann (Kevin) Bonney, eleven grandchildren, Kyle, Ken, Lindzey, Emily, Kara (Jenn), Ryan (Morgan), Mya, Raegan, Kaitlyn, Heather, and Austin (Robyn), twelve great grandchildren, two sister in laws, Joyce Barrick-Krauskoupf, and Judy Oliver, and his best friend Keith Lindsey.

Also preceding him in death are two brothers, Larry (Bev) Maddox, and Keith Maddox, two sisters, Barb (Woody) Underwood, and Delores Adams, one granddaughter Stephanie Maddox, and his two beloved cats Smokey and Lightening.

Louie started working at Grimm Truck Stop in 1966 fueling and repairing trucks. He later worked for Fort Transfer in Morton and retired in 1999 as a truck driver. He was a member of the local Teamsters Union, and a previous member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed watching Nascar, traveling with his 5th wheel camper, and taking care of numerous homeless cats around his home. Louie was very generous over the years donating to countless charities to help those in need. He was an avid reader. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

A graveside service will be held at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

Robert B. Howell, Sr.

Robert B. Howell Sr., 87, of Canton, passed away at 6:16 PM on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 18, 1937 in Salem Township on the Howell Farm, a son of William Jennings Bryan and Angela Elidia (Maffini) Howell. He married Donna Jean Stapleton on February 8, 1958 at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Farmington. She survives at home with her two great grandsons.




He is also survived by three children, Valerie (Tim) Schultz, Robert (Cindy) Howell Jr., and Celeste (Robbie Owen) Crouse; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Carolyn.




He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Nunes, and nephew, John.




Robert worked on the Howell farm at early age, and later helped build the Norris fire house, and several homes, when he worked at Dumler Lumber, also Dumler owned the bowling alley, so Robert bartended at the Bowling alley, then he went to work at Caterpillar where he was electrocuted. After recovering, he then worked for Keystone for 30 years. Before retiring, he was injured from falling from a scaffolding, about 50 feet, and broke his neck and back. He was a member of the Canton Moose and the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, mushrooming and loved his three children, and later on in years his love for his grandchildren, which they were a big part of his life. He also enjoyed playing cards, pool, and visiting with friends at Billy’s Tap and White Oaks Bar.




Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Funeral Services will be immediately following the visitation, from 12:00 PM until about 1:00 PM. Monsignor Timothy Nolan will officiate. Norman L. McMillen

Norman L McMillen, 91, of Ray, IL, passed away at 5:28 am on Monday, December 9, 2024 at Red Oak Estates in Canton, IL. He was born on March 20, 1933, the son of Harry and Iva (Stambaugh) McMillen. Norman married Ruth Pigg on April 14, 1956 in Rushville, IL. Ruth preceded Norman in death on October 2, 2013.


Also preceding him in death are his two brothers; Robert McMillen and Bill McMillen.

He is survived by his two daughters; Susan (and Everett) Easley and Jo Lynn (and Dave) Campbell, both of Astoria, IL, grandson; Chad (and Amanda) Easley of Canton, granddaughter; Ashley (and Jason) Yazvec of Astoria, two great-grandchildren; Jaylee and Jack Yazvec.

Norman was a farmer and raised cattle. He also worked at International Harvester and was a mail carrier during his lifetime.

He was a member of the Rushville American Legion. Norman enjoyed going to auctions, collecting coins, playing poker and raising cattle. One of his biggest hobbies was watching the stock market.

Services will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 13, 2024 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Matthew Thiner will officiate. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Friday. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Schuyler County Humane Society.

George E. Lasswell

Smithfield- George E. Lasswell, 77, of rural Smithfield passed away at noon Sunday December 8th 2024 at his home surrounded by family.


He was born October 29, 1947 at Canton the son of George Leroy and Norma Irene (Lafary) Lasswell. He married Zelda Gibboney on June 18, 1966 at Smithfield. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Darin (Tracey Spaulding) Lasswell of Laurelville, OH; three grandchildren, and one great grandson, one brother, Norman (Marcia) Lasswell of Havana, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers.


George worked at International Harvester in Canton and then retired from Cuba Unit District #3 as their Maintenance Director. He also did carpentry work in the area. He was a member of the Brock United Methodist Church in Smithfield. George enjoyed western dancing, yard sales, wood carving, and tinkering with things. He was devoted to his family.


A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday December 16th at Baughman Cemetery rural Smithfield. Visitation will be held Sunday December 15th from 2-4 PM at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cass-Putman Rescue Squad. Dorla Jene Helle


Farmington- Dorla Jene Helle, 92, of Farmington, IL; died at 11:08 a.m. Sunday, December 8th 2024 at Courtyard Estates in Farmington.


She was born April 5, 1932 in Bernadotte, IL; the daughter of Howard and Alice (Chenoweth) Chambers. She married Clifford Helle on February 28, 1948 in Palmyra, MO. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1994. She was also preceded by her parents; brothers, Frank, Lee, and Richie Chambers; sisters, Connie Fields and Geraldine Myers; and one grandchild, Shauna Helle.


Surviving are one son, Ed (Linda) Helle of Lewistown; one daughter, Phyllis Ault of Farmington; one brother, Larry (Elaine) Chambers of Bernadotte; two sisters, Judy Rench of Canton, and Lynn (Roy) Spangler of Bernadotte; three grandchildren, Gary Ault Jr. of Trivoli, Cheri (Matt) Masters of Willow Spring, NC and Terri Ault of Farmington; four great grandchildren, Katlynn (Trey) Hughes, Harley Ault, Kailey Masters and Kinsey Masters; two great-great grandchildren, Gavin and Oaklynn Hughes and numerous nieces and nephews.


Dorla was a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling.


A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday December 11th at Ipava Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown is assisting the family with arrangements. Kenny Phipps

Kenneth “Kenny” Phipps, 52, of Norris, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 3, 1972, to Berwyn “Rob” Jr and Rebecca (Owens) Phipps. His father preceded him in death.

He married Sarah Karle on August 20, 2011 in Fairview. She survives.

Also surviving is his son Will, his mother, one brother, Kyle (Mandy) Phipps of Ipava, two sisters, Kerri (Adam) LaSala of Canton MO and Adryanne (late Tanner) Alvarado of Gilson and several nieces and nephews.

Kenny worked as a paramedic for the Fulton County EMA. He was the Chief for Copperas Creek Volunteer Fire Department and served on its dive team. Kenny dedicated his life to helping others.

He was an avid hunter. Most of all he was a loving and giving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 4-7 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral service will follow on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 11am, at the funeral home, with a burial to follow at the Norris Cemetery.

Marvin Lee Chockley

Lewistown- Marvin Lee Chockley, 86, of Lewistown, passed away at 11:30 AM on Friday, December 6, 2024 at his residence. He was born on May 6, 1938 in Vermont, Illinois, a son of Joe W. and Lela G. (Vanfosson) Chockley. He married Gayla Stufflebeam on July 9, 1960 in Farmington. She survives.


Also surviving Marvin, is his two sons, Troy Chockley of Jefferson City, Missouri; Scott Chockley of Peoria; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, brother, Joe D. Chockley, and sisters Marge and Lois.


He worked and retired in 1993 from the Local Steamfitters Union #353 in Peoria, after many years.

Vernon “Tom” Thomas

Vernon “Tom” Thomas, 78, of Canton, IL, passed away at 8:10 AM on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at OSF in Peoria, IL. He was born on June 8, 1946 in Canton, IL, to Vernon “Red” and Wilma Mae (Jackaway) Thomas. He married Linda Jean Girard on February 8, 1970 in Bryant, IL. She survives.


He is also survived by three children, William Thomas from Roseville, IL, John Thomas of Canton, IL, and Victoria and Gil Plasencia of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; four grandchildren, Nickolous Girard Thomas, Gavin Fryer, Brittany Plasencia, and Logan Plasencia; three brothers, Kelly, Sam, and Joe Thomas.


He is preceded in death by his parents; and one sister.


Tom worked and retired from Maytag for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a member of the American Legion in Canton, IL and the Evangelical Free Church of Canton, IL.


He was also a Veteran of the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War from 1968-1971.


Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Pastor Matt Spangler will officiate. Visitation will be held the same day from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Burial will follow services at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton, IL. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
