John R. “Peanuts” Yerbic


Canton – John R. “Peanuts” Yerbic, 85, of Canton, passed away at 2:34 AM on Friday, May 29, 2020 at his residence. He was born on September 19, 1934 in Dunfermline, IL to Frank and Mildred (Gilson) Yerbich. He married Margaret “Peggy” Bybee on June 30, 1956 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2012.

John was also preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Deborah Yerbic, one brother, Frank Yerbic, and two grandchildren, Matthew Sheets and Kayla Hooker.

He is survived by three children, Steve (Tina Hooker) Yerbic of Canton, Thomas Yerbic of Florida, and Patricia (Mike) Sheets of Morton, five grandchildren, Staci (Chad) Mayall, Ashley (Kevin) Connolly, Kyle (Kristin) Sheets, John T. Yerbic, and Taylor Yerbic, five great-grandchildren, Mason and Everly Sheets, Kane Connolly, Connor and Brady Mayall, two sister’s-in-law, Shirley Yerbic and Anne Engquist, and one sister, Josephine (the late Jack) Callahan.

John worked as an engineer at Caterpillar in Peoria for 35 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Canton VFW Post 1984. He was an avid Cardinals and Packers fan. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and playing cards. He also loved Disney World, where he visited over 100 times.

John served in the United Sates Navy in the Korean War for three years.
