Jeannine Shanks, 91, of Astoria, Illinois, passed away at 12:50 am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at her home. She was born on February 25, 1932 in Terre Haute, IL, the daughter of Gale and Theda (Drain) Powell. Jeannine married Ernest D. Shanks on February 4, 1951 in Brooklyn, Illinois. Ernest preceded Jeannine in death on May 5, 2021.
Also preceding her in death is her son; Duane Kenneth Shanks and two granddaughters; Bambi Shanks and Georgia Ann Duckwiler.
Survivors include four daughters; Vicky (and Dean) Conway of Astoria, Phyllis (and Rick) Batterton of Ipava, Illinois, Anni Mitchell of Astoria, and Roberta (and Chris) McCormick of Astoria, 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, 4 sisters and 1 brother.
Jeannine was a homemaker. Ernest and Jeannine were Camp Emmanuel Managers from 1975 to 1984. They owned and operated Evergreen Hygro Systems in Astoria, where Jeannine was the bookkeeper.
She was a member of the Woodland Church of the Brethren, Astoria Quilt Society and spent several years assisting at the South Fulton Senior Center in Astoria.
She enjoyed sewing and quilting, attending her grandchildren’s sports games, and loved having the family over and taking care of her grandchildren.
Visitation for Jeannine will be held on Friday, February 23 from 6-8 pm at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10:00 am in the Blackburn Cemetery, Brooklyn, Illinois. Her grandson Jim Grossnickle-Batterton and Pastor Lisa Fike will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Woodland Church of the Brethren or the South Fulton Senior Center in Astoria.
