Hubert R. Cripe


Hubert R. Cripe, age 97 of Astoria, IL, passed away at 11:27 am Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at his home. He was born on October 26, 1920 in Bader, IL, the son of Oliver John and Alma Mae (Miller) Cripe. On December 21, 1946, Hubert married Louisa Jean Vollmer in Bader. She preceded him in death on July 18, 2009.

Hubert was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, Morris, and Wilmer.

Hubert was an Army veteran, serving in the 734 Bomb Squadron, 453 Bomb Group as a pilot with the rank of Captain from 1943 to 1946. He served as a POW after being shot down on a mission over Germany.

He was a retired manager and salesman for FS in Ipava, IL. He also farmed.

Hubert was a member of Grace Bible Church in Astoria where he served as Deacon Emeritus. He was also a member of the Astoria Lions Club, the Astoria American Legion Post #25, the Farm Bureau, and a member and officer of the South Fulton Senior Center in Astoria.

He was a former member of the Rushville Flying Club and Camp Emmanuel Camp Board.

Hubert was a wonderful father who loved his grandkids. He loved to fly and fish.

He is survived by his son, Roy (and Virginia) Cripe of Downers Grove, IL, his daughter Becky (and Mike) Lightle of Pittsfield, IL, two grandsons, Aaron (and Pam) Lightle and Matthew (and Rachel) Lightle, and three great-grandchildren, David, Kelsey, and Hailey Lightle.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 11:00 am at Grace Bible Church in Astoria. Pastor Ben Murray will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, February 23rd at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Memorials may be given to the South Fulton Senior Center or Grace Bible Church. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery with military rites provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25.
