Hazel J. Bontjes

Hazel Jeanette Bontjes, 84, of Havana passed away at 11:22 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at OSF St.

Francis Hospital in Peoria. She was born on August 15, 1938 in Havana to Ollie W. and Pearl Irene (Bell)
Reynolds. She married Herman Bontjes on August 7, 1959 at the Havana Church of Christ.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Herman Bontjes of Havana; children, David (Lauri) Bontjes of Davie,
Florida and Suzette Grant of Canton, Illinois; grandchildren, Jacqueline Bontjes of Charlottesville,
Virginia, Martin Bontjes of Los Angeles, California, and Marissa Grant of Dumfernline, Illinois; and step-
grandchildren, Michaela Halvorson and Zach Grant. She was preceded in death by her parents and
brother, Edwin Reynolds.
Hazel was a member of the Havana Church of Christ. She worked for Grant’s Florist and Clark’s
Department Store in Havana. She enjoyed baking and sharing her cookies and candies with others. She
also enjoyed handing out birthday and anniversary cards to members of her church.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in
Havana. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Havana Church of Christ.
Pastor Bill Boyce and Pastor Dave Upchurch will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Laurel Hill
Cemetery in Havana.
Memorial donations may be made in Hazel’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences
