Canton - Ruthe H. Gillam, 86, of Canton passed away on April 6, 2017, at 9:45 PM at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 12, 1930 near Topeka, Illinois the daughter of Adolph and Emma (Durdle) Harfst. They preceded her in death.
Ruthe was a 1948 graduate of Haw Creek Township High School in Gilson and a 1952 graduate of Western Illinois State Teacher’s College in Macomb. She married her college sweetheart, Leroy Gillam on June 22, 1952, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on July 19, 2010. Mrs. Gillam taught first grade in Aurora, IL and Kindergarten in Cuba, IL. She participated in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Big Ten 4-H Club of Cuba during the years her children were growing up. Along with her husband, she owned and operated Pleasant Row Orchard in Cuba for 43 years before retiring in 2004 and moving to Canton. She served for many years as secretary of Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Canton where she previously taught Sunday School.
Mrs. Gillam is survived by her four children, David (Kim) of Canton, Vicki (Bob) Baughman of Yorkville, Julie (Dale) Hodgson of Kilbourne, and Doug (Stephanie) Gillam of Normal. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, Nick (Kara) Baughman, Luke (Allison) Baughman, Cheryl (Beau) Thomas, Kyle Hodgson, Andy (Alicia), Tom, Jim and Marissa Gillam, Tyler and Tanner Gillam, and four great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be on Sunday April 9, 2017, from 5-7 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Services will be on Monday April 10, 2017, 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Micah Garnett officiating. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
