He was born May 3, 1928 in Buckheart Township to Forrest Clifford Sr. and LaBerta G. (Slater) Downing.
He married Erma M. Black on June 28, 1963 at Mt Pleasant Church in rural Lewistown. She preceded him in death on March 30, 2015.
Also preceding him in death are two brothers, John P. Downing and Forrest Downing Jr.
He is survived by one sister, June Tompkins, one niece, Cheryl (Chuck) Rakestraw, one nephew, Bill (Kathy) Downing, two step granddaughters including Heather (Greg) Longfellow, with whom he remained close, one step grandson, one step great grandson, three great step granddaughters and several great nieces and nephews.
Red served in the U.S. Airforce serving in Germany. He retired from International Harvester after 31 years of service. He was active in the UAW Local #1357 serving as a Union Steward and a member of the International Harvester Retiree’s Club. He enjoyed working on 1940’s Willy’s Jeeps and Army trucks. He also enjoyed to fish in his spare time.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024 at 10 am, at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton. There will be no visitation.
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton has been entrusted with services.
