He was born June 19, 1947 in Canton the son of Ray F. and Mary (Hickman) Schmidt. He married Linda Oatman on January 24, 1969 at Locust Lane United Methodist Church at rural Canton. She survives along with two children, Christina (Jay) Heckart of Lewistown and Jacob Schmidt also of Lewistown, and one sister, Janet Weber of Lewistown. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Roy retired from Caterpillar after working 45 years. He had been a part time police officer for the City of Lewistown. Roy enjoyed mowing and volunteered to mow at the City Kids Camp in rural Lewistown. He was a Master Instructor for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Hunter Safety Program for 40 years. Roy served in the US Army during the Vietnam war as a helicopter gunner. He was a member of the Lewistown United Methodist Church, UAW Local 974, Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1, and Pheasants Forever. Roy enjoyed hunting.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday July 1st at the Lewistown United Methodist Church with Reverend Shane Smith officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Cuba Cemetery with a military service conducted by the Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1, and the Lewistown VFW Post 5001. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewistown American Legion.
