Born September 11, 1935 in Canton, Illinois, she was the oldest of five children born to Ernest Williams and Helen Powers. Early in life her nurturing and caregiving was apparent, ultimately leading to a career in nursing. For the entirety of her nursing career, she helped deliver countless babies in the Canton area. In 1954 she met John Atherton with whom she had 3 children: John Michael, Tyrrell and Cathy. Her greatest love, however, was Frank Frederick to whom she was married for 38 years, until the time of his passing.
After her departure from the nursing field, Phyllis filled her time spending time with family, playing cards, frequenting Countryside Family Diner, updating those that had moved away with the local gossip and obituary listings, and doting on her grandchildren (as well as great grandchildren, and recently great-great grandchildren). Phyllis found other family in those she met at her church, Bryant Christian Church, and she sought comfort in her daily spiritual reading. Those that love her say that she was the strongest, and most stubborn, woman they have ever known.
Graveside services will be held on Monday June 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, with Pastor Brian Ebert of Bryant Christian Church officiating.
There to join her at the pearly gates were her husband (Frank), parents (Ernie and Helen), and many friends and extended family. Left to mourn her are her children John Michael Atherton, Tyrrell (Larry) Whitman, and Cathy Atherton; siblings Chuck (Judy), Butch (Judy), Bob (Alice), Sue; 8 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a few great-great-grandchildren.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers or food, please consider making a donation to Bryant Christian Church or the Lewiston VFW in Phyllis’ honor.
Love yesterday, today, and forever.
