Melvin D. Woods
Canton – Melvin D. Woods, 93, of Canton, passed away at 1:52 pm Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Canton. He was born on May 27, 1923 in Canton to Otis R. and Edith Mabel (Motsinger) Wood. Melvin married Peggy L. Snider on March 2, 1950 in Ft. Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2001. Also preceding him in death were his parents, son-in-law Ted Freiley, three sisters; Mildred Scalf, Mary Coutant, and Louise Anderson, four brothers; Paul, Marion, Raymond, and Donald, and grandson Brian Freiley.
Surviving are three daughters; Dianna Freiley of Independence, MO, Sarah (Michael) Wright of Canton, Debra (Roger) Lee of Edelstein, IL, five grandchildren; Heath (Felisa) Freiley, Jacquetta (Justin) Kasprzak, Christopher Wright, Derek Filko, Devin Filko, and four great-grandchildren; Ethan, Nathan, James, and Josie.
Melvin worked at I.H.C. in Canton as an assembler and plow polisher for 36.5 years, retiring in 1982. He was a Marine veteran serving in WWII in the Pacific, as a Corporal from 1943-1946. He fought in the battle of Tarawa. Melvin was a member of the Senior Bowling League and the Canton Country Club.
Services will be 11:00 am Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be one hour prior to services. The Rev. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton with Military Honors. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
