Canton – Betty J. Markello, 87, of Canton, passed away at 11:33 AM on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Graham Hospital. She was born on August 28, 1928 in Canton to Lloyd and Edna (Woodcock) Girard. She married John O. Markello on July 10, 1948 in Canton. He survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Julie (Kermit) Negley of Canton; and one grandson, Zachary J. Negley.
Preceding her in death are her parents; one brother, Lloyd Girard; and three sisters, Fern Williams, Faye Emry, and Mary Girard.
Betty worked at Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 40 years, retiring in 1986. She is of the Christian faith. Betty volunteered at meals on wheels. She was a past member of YWCA Board of Directors, Board of directors of the Fulton Mason Women’s Crisis, past member of the Graham Hospital Service League and Board, member of Federated Business and Professional Women, Altrusa Club, Canton Women’s Club, Literacy Council, and Telephone Pioneers of America. Betty was the 1992 YWCA Salutee of Women of Achievement.
Services will be at 11 AM on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, where a visitation will be held from 10-11 AM. Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate. Burial will follow the services at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. Memorials can be made to YWCA or Salvation Army.
