James W. Hartford


Canton – James Warren Hartford, 78, of Canton passed away at 5:14 pm Sunday, May 29, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.  He was born on August 21, 1937 in Huntley, Montana to Francis J. and Frances (Focher) Hartford.  Jim married Janet Hedden September 20, 1963 in Canton.  She survives along with a daughter Kelly (Richard) Mierkowski of Urbana, IL, and three sisters; Margaret Hartford of California, Joanne K. Battleshall of Phoenix, AZ, and Beverly A. Butterworth of Cadillac, MI.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim retired from Pekin Life Insurance Company in 2003 where he worked as an underwriter.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton, Morning Star Lodge AF & AM in Canton, Canton Rotary Club, President of Travelers Protection Association, Canton Flying Club, City Councilman for 16 years, Republican Precinct Committeeman, 40 & 8, served for 22 years in armed forces (Air Force and Illinois Air National Guard), and active in the Fulton County Playhouse.
His achievements include: JCI (Junior Chamber International) Senator ship; Lee Colbert Memorial Award (Republican Party); SRC Alumni Achievement Award; and Presidential Award of Honor (Canton Jaycees).
Services will be 11 am Monday, June 6, 2016 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Monroe Bailey officiating.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Sunday, June 5, 2016 with Masonic

Melva Crnkovich


Quincy – Melva Jean Crnkovich, 86, of Quincy, formerly of Wee-Ma-Tuk, died at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy.
She was born September 17, 1929, in Canton to George Ivan and Luella Mae (Harris) Maurice.  She married William E. Crnkovich on September 16, 1950, in Canton.  He preceded her in death on August 4, 1996. 
She is survived by one sister, Patricia Lee Bybee of Quincy; her niece and caregiver, Jan (Fritz) Wys of Lewistown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, George Elmer Maurice; and her nephew and caregiver, Steven Bybee.
Melva was a cost accountant for International Harvester Co., retiring February 1, 1978.  She was an accomplished bowler and golfer, winning several awards for her talents.  She was a former member and officer of the Canton Women’s Bowling Association, Women of the Moose, and Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held one hour prior to services.  Burial will be at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Judith E. "Judy" Lawrence



Judith E. "Judy" Lawrence, 70, of Bartonville, Illinois passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 31, 1946 in Canton, Illinois to Merle and Dorothy (Davis) Reneau. She married James Lawrence on June 26, 1971 in Peoria, Illinois. He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Brett and Chad Lawrence both of Bartonville. She has three grandchildren, Zachary, Braedon and Payton Lawrence; four brothers, Harry Reneau of Groveland, Warren Reneau of West LaFayette, Indiana, Mark Reneau of Canton and Gary Reneau of Washington, Illinois; one sister, Martha Sepich of St. David, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Judy worked as a secretary at Keystone Steel and Wire Company and the Abraham Amusement Company for many years. She loved her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, gardening and taking care of her flowers. She attended Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria. The Rev. Karl Eckhoff will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Swan Lake Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church. David Probyn

 
Banner – David Probyn, 29, of Banner passed away 12:14 am Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Graham Hospital Emergency Room.  He was born on December 1, 1986 in Canton the son of David Earl and Susan Marie (Strode) Probyn of Banner.  David was the father of Lucy Anne Goforth Probyn of Canton.  David died of a heart attack due to diabetes in his home May 25, 2016.  Grandson of Joanne and Jasper Probyn and Gladys and Dale Strode. He also leaves behind a brother Jay Brush, sister Jennie Brush, aunt Lisa Morse, uncle Thomas Probyn, nephews; Garrett Fawcett and Loren Brush, nieces Jessica Huskey, numerous cousins, and his loving girlfriend Becca Nussel.
He was the most loved son in the world.  Where ever he is, he is with his dog Chase.
Graveside services will be at 10 am Saturday, May 28 at Walnut Cemetery in rural Banner.

Farmington – Kathryn Margaret Mary Porter, 89, of Farmington, passed away at 1:50 PM on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at her daughter’s home surrounded by family. She was born on March 21, 1927 in Farmington to Gerald and Elizabeth (Hammersbach) Bales. She married James R. Porter on August 1, 1948 in Farmington. He preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death are her parents and one brother, Pat Bales.
Surviving are six children; Terri Psinas, Diane Gilstrap, John Porter, Jerold Porter, Jamie Leeper, and Donna Nelson; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Miner.
Kathryn was a member of Farmington United Methodist Church and the Eastern Stars in Farmington. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting that many families, clubs, and Charity’s received her items.

Levenia L. Harn


Canton – Levenia L. Harn, 97, of Canton died at 12:34 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Graham Hospital in Canton. She was born November 4, 1918, in Fulton County, to Stephen R. and Florence R. (Wilson) Johnson. She married W. Merle Harn on August 22, 1935, in
Petersburg. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1995.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Raymond “Bud” Harn; her parents; two sisters, Garnet McElroy and Berdella Wages; and two brothers, Harold E. Johnson and Raymond L. Johnson.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Fonda Johnson of Polo; daughter-in-law, Jean Harn of Freeport; three grandsons, Alan (Rowan) of Freeport, Michael (Sara) of Forreston, and Kevin (Julie) of Lena; four great-granddaughters, Kayla, Rachel, Isabell, and Emma Harn; five great-grandsons, Gavin (Nina), Grandon, Gunner, Adam, and Andrew Harn; and great-great-grandson, Ethan Harn.
Levenia was self-employed as a florist and loved her flowers. She was a member of the Canton First Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Phyllis A. Pollitt


Macomb – Phyllis A. Pollitt, 85, of Macomb formerly of Canton passed away at 12:10 am Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Wesley Village in Macomb.  She was born on September 19, 1930 in Farmington to Archie and Edna (McCammon) Mendenhall.  Phyllis married Wallace Eugene Pollitt on July 29, 1950 in Canton.  He preceded her in death on March 1, 2011.
Surviving are four children; David (the late Eva) Pollitt of San Mateo, CA, Kevin (Susan) Pollitt of Canton, Greg (Teresa) Pollitt of Hendersonville, NC, and Maureen (John) Nation of Macomb, and two grandchildren; Paul Pollitt and Karen Calhoun.
Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard Mendenhall and two sisters; Louise Milleson and Barbara Heffren.
Phyllis worked as a LPN at various facilities in the community and also in human resources for Ag-Rain in Havana.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton.
Services will be 11 am Friday, May 27, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Canton where visitation will be one hour prior to services.  Rev. Canton – Peggy D. McWhorter, 84, of Canton, passed away at 9:45 pm, Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton.  She was born on December 2, 1931 in Canton to Arthur D. and Ethel B. (Murphy) Pollitt.
Peggy married Irrie L. McWhorter on October 15, 1976 in Canton.  He preceded her in death on August 18, 2012.
Surviving are three children; Marla (Mark) Reneau of Canton, Kelly (Ed) Elson of Canton and Kimberly (John) Harms of Cullum, IL, two sisters, Marilyn Henderson of Canton, Judith Oliver of Canton, six grandchildren, Amy (Tyson) Smith, Mandy (Brett) Sipe, Nikki (Kevin) Briggs, Shane McWhorter, Devin McWhorter, Eddie Joe Elson and three great grandchildren Katie and Jake Smith and Kayden McWhorter.
Also preceding her in death are five bothers; Charles Pollitt, Wallace Pollitt, Arthur Pollitt, William Pollitt, infant brother Robert and three sisters, Melba Kumer, Penelope Wolf and Betty Bayless and one grandson Troy.
Peggy worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1986.  She was a member of First Christian Church in Canton and its Christian Women’s Fellowship.  She was also lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers and an avid St Louis Cardinals fan.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 11am, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a visitation one hour prior at the funeral home.

Canton–Sarah E. Arnett, 37, of Canton, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the Unity Point Methodist Hospital in Peoria.
She was born on August 16, 1978, in St. Louis, MO, to William and Cynthia (Smith) Patterson.
She married Darren M. Arnett, on June 5, 2004 in Table Grove.  He survives.
Also surviving are her children, Madelyn and Mason, her mother, Cindy (Stephen) Rice of Cape Fair, MO, father, Bill (Catherine) Patterson of Page, AZ, maternal grandparents, Barbara and Jerry Smith of Granite City, brother Billy (Jamie) Patterson of Glen Carbon, sister Rebekah Patterson of Granite City and her mother and father-in-law, Lyle and Dorothy Arnett of Lewistown.
Sarah was a Title I teacher at Eastview Elementary School in Canton and a member of the Suburban Baptist Church in Granite City.
She enjoyed reading, but most of all she was a loving wife, mother and daughter and she enjoyed spending her time with her kids and family.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2015, from 4-6 pm, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a funeral service at 6 pm.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a burial of ashes will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Roy Wheeler


CUBA- Roy N. Wheeler, 74, of Cuba, passed away at 12:32 AM on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Graham Hospital in Canton. He was born on April 25, 1942 in Bardolph, IL, a son of Charles and Goldie Raymond Wheeler. Roy married Angie Blakesley on August 3, 1996 in Farmington, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Michelle (Kenny) Johnson, Debbie Young, Roy Allen Wheeler, Erin (Ethan) Wise all of Farmington; three step-children, Tasha Widger of Norris, Travis Smizer, and Wendell Smizer both of Cuba. 16 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, seven brothers, Gale Wheeler of Smithfield, John Wheeler, Erie Wheeler both of Elmwood, Bob Wheeler of Farmington, Chuck Wheeler of Galesburg, Richard Wheeler of Yates City, and Lawrence Wheeler of Farmington,  and one sister, Velma Rosiere of Elmwood.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Ellen Chaney.

He retired from Caterpillar in East Peoria after 30 years of service in 1994. Roy was of the Methodist faith, a United States Army veteran and member of the Cuba American Legion Post# 533.

Per Roy’s wishes there will be no services, cremation rites have been accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Baughman Cemetery. James Theyse


Canton– James E. Theyse, 94, of Canton, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Heartland Health Care in Canton.
He was born on March 6, 1922 in Mulberry Ks, to August and Martha (Reed) Theyse.  They preceded him in death.
He married JoAnne Kepley on September 28, 1948, in Newbedford, IL.  She preceded him in death on March 25, 2015.
Also surviving is his daughter, Teryl (Randy) Stell of Canton, one brother Bill Theyse of Dunfermline, five grandchildren, Jason (Laura) Stell of St. Louis, MO, Mark (Charity) Theyse of Mapleton,  Larry Ostertag of St. James MO, Laura Theyse of St. David, Launa Theyse of Bryant, seven great grandchildren and his daughter-in-law, Patricia Theyse of Bryant.
His son James “Jamie” Theyse also preceded him in death.
James was a member of the US Coast Guard from 1942-1946 and served aboard the Destroyer Escort Marchand in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
He worked for Little Sister Mine, Truax Mine and later retired from Consol Coal Co.in 1982.  He was a member of the South Park United Methodist Church. In 1947 he joined the Masonic Lodge, the Peoria Consistory and rose to the level of 32 degree.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.  There will be no visitation.  Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Gioannini

Farmington – Edward Gioannini, 95, of Farmington passed away at 12:55 a.m., on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Farmington Country Manor.
He was born August 11, 1920, in Gilchrist, to John and Lucille (Gagliardo) Gioannini.
He married Jane Tuttle. She proceeded him in death.
Also proceeding him in death are two brothers, John Gioannini, and Joe Gioannini, and one sister Annette Gioannini.
Edward was a farmer and an auctioneer, he is  a veteran of the United States Army serving in WWII.

Canton – Elizabeth Champlin, 84, of Canton, passed away at 7:55 AM on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at her residence. She was born on July 6, 1931 in Fulton County to Floyd and Helen (Abbott) Cleer. She married Robert F. “Bob” Champlin Sr. on May 16, 1953 in Canton, IL. He survives.

Also surviving is one son, Robert F. “Rick” (Julie) Champlin of Canton; one granddaughter, Lena Champlin; two brothers, Ray (Emily) Cleer of Canton, and Dale (Marylin) Cleer of Hanna City; and one sister, Shirley Helle of Canton.

Preceding her in death are her parents.

Elizabeth worked as a nurse at the Graham Medical Group in Canton. She was a member of Church of the Brethren in Canton. She was also a member of Fulton County Master Gardener’s, Garden Club, Women Committee Farm Bureau, Graham Hospital Nurses Alumni, and Canton Main Street.

Services will be at 10 AM on Monday, May 23, 2016 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton. Rev. Kevin Kessler will officiate. Betty J. Markello


Canton – Betty J. Markello, 87, of Canton, passed away at 11:33 AM on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Graham Hospital. She was born on August 28, 1928 in Canton to Lloyd and Edna (Woodcock) Girard. She married John O. Markello on July 10, 1948 in Canton. He survives.

Also surviving is one daughter, Julie (Kermit) Negley of Canton; and one grandson, Zachary J. Negley.

Preceding her in death are her parents; one brother, Lloyd Girard; and three sisters, Fern Williams, Faye Emry, and Mary Girard.

Betty worked at Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 40 years, retiring in 1986. She is of the Christian faith. Betty volunteered at meals on wheels. She was a past member of YWCA Board of Directors, Board of directors of the Fulton Mason Women’s Crisis, past member of the Graham Hospital Service League and Board, member of Federated Business and Professional Women, Altrusa Club, Canton Women’s Club, Literacy Council, and Telephone Pioneers of America. Betty was the 1992 YWCA Salutee of Women of Achievement.

Lyle B. Mason


Cuba- Lyle B. Mason, 83, of rural Cuba passed away at 8:02 AM Monday May 16, 2016 at his home.

He was born October 1, 1932 at Cuba the son of Blake and Sylvia (Melvin) Mason. He married Doretta Skaggs on September 23, 1955 at Manito. She survives. Also surviving are six children, George (Christie) Mason of Cuba, David Mason of Bushnell, Jeanne Dams of Cuba, Debbie (Chris) Wright of Cuba, Phillip (Patty) Mason of Bushnell, and Paul (Niki) Mason of Canton, four siblings, Pat (Fred) Benns of Pinckneyville, Charlie (Vickie) Mason of Lewistown, Larry (Rosemary) Mason of Summum, and Lynn Mason of Havana, 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren, two aunts, Georgia Stambaugh of Cuba, and Lena Mae Franklin of Canton, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Bob Dams, and a great grandson Zachory Taylor.

Lyle was a lifelong farmer and had also worked at Caterpillar. He was a veteran serving in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956. He was a member of the Fulton County Farm Bureau, and the Cuba American Legion. Lyle enjoyed farming, fishing, mushrooming, and hunting and he especially enjoyed spending time with family. He welcomed everyone and never knew a stranger. The family would like to thank the nurses of Graham Hospice and Grant Keime for their care for Lyle.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday at the Henry-Lange Memorial home in Cuba with Pastor Ellen Dodd officiating. Burial will be at Cuba cemetery with military services conducted by the Cuba American Legion Russell Smith Post 533. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the memorial home. Jean Lidwell


Canton- Jean Ellen (Hackett) Lidwell, 70, of Canton passed away at 3:44 PM Saturday May 14, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born March 15, 1946 at Peoria the daughter of Steven C. Hackett and Wilma E. (Baumgartner) Hackett-Weber. She married David LeRoy Lidwell on January 25, 1969 at Lewistown. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Gayla Marie Lidwell of Peoria, and KiLee Ellen (Jason) Lidwell-McFerren of Gibson City, three granddaughters, Kaylynn Marie Garner, Juniper Delphia McFerren, and Linnaea Jean McFerren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, E.T. Weber and her brother Kirby Hackett.   

Jean graduated from Rushville High School in 1965 and Springfield School of Beauty in 1966.   Jean worked many years as a beautician and house wife.   During the 90's she created her own business (Corporate Shopper).   Jean will always be remembered as loving, funny, empathetic, and beautiful.   She was dedicated to her family and her 4 legged friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Reverend Kevin VanTine officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Lewistown. Kelly Giddens


Canton – Kelly “Keleeka” Giddens, 32, of Canton, passed away on Thursday, May12, 2016, in Canton.
She was born on March 21, 1984, in Canton.
Surviving are her father Michael (Tammy) Giddens, her mother, Julie (Kevin) McKinley, children, Ethan Long, Landon Bettis, Maxim Bettis, Maternal grandparents, Ronald and Violet Melvin, paternal grandmother, Marlene Appleget, brothers, Matthew (Courtney) Green, Shane Giddens, Taryn Giddens and sisters, Jessica (Joseph) Riley, Kelsey (Wesley) Emberton, Tiah Giddens and Tamaney Giddens.
Kelly worked as the Nursing Supervisor at Heartland Nursing Home in Peoria.  She enjoyed writing poetry.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 1-3 pm, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a funeral service at 3 pm.
Cremation rights will be accorded following the service.
Memorials may be made to an education fund for her children C/O CEFCU.

William A. List Jr.


Canton – William A. List Jr., 91 of Canton passed away at 2:45 am Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Canton.  He was born on September 22, 1924 in Peoria, IL. to William A. and Martha M. (Waxer) List Sr. Bill married Shirley Ann Baylor on December 22, 1945 in Kansas City, KS.  She preceded him in death on March 11, 2011.  Also preceding in death were his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
Surviving is one son Kelly (Zoa) List of Centerville, MO, two brothers; Leland List of Canton and Kenny List of Canton and a sister Thelma Lewis of Pekin.
Bill was a self-employed carpenter a member of First Christian Church in Canton and the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.
Graveside services will be 10 am Tuesday, May 17, 2016 in Brunswick Cemetery.  The Rev. Glenn Nestlerode will officiate.  Cremation rites have been accorded.  Memorials can be made to the Canton Park District Senior Rec Center.
