Gisela Schuman, 89, of Farmington passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Unity Point Hospital.
She was born on September 3, 1932, in Heidelberg Germany, to Heinrich and Susanna (Sieber) Schwarz. She married Hubert Schuman on August 8, 1953, in Heidelberg, Germany.
Gisela is survived by her sister Inge Kappings of Heidelberg, Germany, four children, Dale (Cynthia) Schuman of Colorado Springs, CO, Susan (Robert) Carroll of Peoria, IL, Mike Schuman of Grayslake, IL, and Ken (Michele) Schuman of Geneva, IL; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, her parents and two sisters Lore Stammler and Anneliese Nollert.
Working alongside her husband, Hubert, they built a new home in Farmington largely by themselves. They lived in the home from 1959 until this year. Gisela worked at the Canton State Bank where she enjoyed working with customers. She retired with her husband in 1991.
Gisela was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed knitting. Over the years, she used these talents in various charitable endeavors like making pillows and small blankets for her American Sewing Guild local chapter’s donation campaigns and reworking masks for OSF at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. She also made much of her own and some of her family’s clothing. She made all sorts of special pieces from children’s sport coats to prom dresses. Gisela was very active in the local American Sewing guild chapter. She attended national meetings and was the treasurer for a time. For years Gisela also volunteered at the Graham Hospital gift shop.
She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington in 1962 and was an active member. For several years she served as church treasurer and was active in the church Women’s Society.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church in Farmington, IL. A lunch will follow after services at the church. David Schuman, her grandson, will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded with Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington, IL. Memorials may be made to the Farmington Rescue Squad.
