Janice "Jan" Smith
Canton-Janice Susan Smith, 81, passed away at 9:08 a.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton.
Born October 4, 1936, in Peoria, the daughter of Howard and Martha Droll, she married Robert Mack Smith on January 12, 1957. He survives.
She is also survived by her two sons, Benjamin R. Smith and Timothy H. Smith, both of Canton; two granddaughters, Emily S. Smith, of Yamhill, OR, and Toni A. Jones, of Portland, OR; two grandsons, Chuck Greer and Eric Greer; three nieces, Mrs. David (Paula) Mills, Dee Denmark and Connie Denmark; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Evelyn Denmark.
Jan was a woman of faith who was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church. During her time at Wesley, she taught children and adult Sunday school classes, served as UMW president, worked in the children's nursery, and helped with the annual bazaar. She was a 1954 graduate of Woodruff High School. She taught square dancing and ballroom dancing, and was one of the first female square dance callers in the area. She loved to cook, was an avid reader, and loved to spend time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose kind, generous spirit will be greatly missed.
A visitation for Jan will be from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the funeral to follow at 12 p.m. The Reverend Bruce Rushing will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
