George L. Hughes, 91, of Astoria, IL, passed away at 5:05 pm on Monday, September 2, 2024 at Beardstown Health & Rehab Center in Beardstown, IL. He was born on Friday, September 16, 1932 in Browning, IL, the son of George C. and Grace R. (Stambaugh) Hughes. George married Doris Parkinson on September 4, 1963 in Lewistown, IL. She survives.
Also surviving is his son, David Hughes of Astoria, three granddaughters; Kirstin (and Anthony) Anderson of New Lisbon, WI, Kaylie (and Cody Schultz) of Lewistown, IL, and Samantha (and Austin) Quandt of Kansas City, MO, five great-grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces.
He is preceded by one son; James Dayle Hughes, sister; Geneva Howard, brother; David Jack Hughes, and one niece.
George served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1953 where he was stationed at the Marshall Islands and was also a veteran of the Korean War. After his time in the Navy, George joined the United States Navy Reserves where he served for eight years. During his service time, George was a fire fighter and a member of the construction battalion.
George was a farmer from eighteen years of age until he was in his seventies. He was also a bricklayer for 60 years. George was recognized by the International Brick Layers and Masonries of Washington D.C. as a Golden Star Brick Layer award winner. George loved to work and was known for not being able to set still.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau. While in high school, George was involved in several sports. He always enjoyed watching sports and would attend several sporting events at the Astoria school when he was able. Baseball was his favorite sport to play and watch. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and playing games with him.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Services are pending. Memorials may be made to the Astoria Rescue Squad or the Beardstown Health & Rehab Center.
