Canton - John R. Powell, 90, of Canton, passed away, Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Loft Rehabilitation and Nursing Home of Canton.
He was born in Canton, on June 26, 1931, to Joseph "Carl" and Jane Powell.He married Neva M. (Helle) Powell on November 15, 1951, in Avon. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2010.
He is survived by four children, John (Gina) Powell Jr. of Spring hill, Florida, Melinda (Alan) Ford of Pekin, Melody (Rick) Berry of Canton and Keith (Beth) Powell of Canton, one sister Mary Christian of Canton, eight grandchildren, Aaron (Michelle) Powell, Jeremy (Tracey) Powell, Rebecca (Mark) Jarke, Christopher Ford, Alex (Beth) Ford, Cody (Samantha) Ford, Amanda (Chris) Vaultonburg, and Josh (Krysten) Powell, and Nine great grandchildren, Caitlyn and Ashley Powell, Matthew and Andrew Sadusky, Mia Powell, Devin Taylor, Allysia Vaultonburg, Kellynn and Kathrynne Ford and Lillyan Powell.
Also preceding him in death are five brothers, Chet, Fred, Robert "Barney", Guy, and Jake and three sisters, Wilma Miller, Lois Kennedy, and Sybil Lidwell.
John is a veteran of the United States Air Force he served as a M.P. where he was stationed in San Juan Puerto Rico. John worked for International Harvester in Canton until its closing. He later retired from the Springfield Ohio location in 1986.
He was an active member of the Fiatt Independent Christian Church where he served as Deacon and as a Trustee. He was also a member of the Fairview American Legion. John was also honored to be a part of the September 2019 Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
He enjoyed all sports, basketball, baseball and football were among his favorites. He was a lifetime pass holder for the North Fulton Wildcats football games which he loved to attend for countless years. John was little league coach for the Smithfield Pirates which his children played for. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan.
Memorials may be made to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight or to Fiatt Independent Christian Church.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022, at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. burial with military honors will be held at Wiley Cemetery in Ellisville.
