Canton - Barbara "Barb" Schoonover, 71, of Canton, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at Red Oak Estates in Canton.
She was born on March 25, 1950, to Cecil and Viola "Vi" (Henning) Bennett. They preceded her in death, along with one brother Richard "Dick" (Pam) Bennett.She married Craig Schoonover on January 31, 1971, in Rushville. He preceded her in death on January 31, 2019.
She is survived by two children, Jamie Schoonover and Cory (Rachel) Schoonover, two grandchildren, Connor Ball and Isabella Schoonover, three brothers, Jim (Ann) Bennett of Iowa, Larry (Debra) Bennett of Rushville, and Jeff (Teresa) of Macomb, several nieces and nephews, and two "bonus grandkids" Audry and Abbi DeRenzy.
Barb, or as most knew her "Momma Schoon" started teaching in Cuba from 1978 until 1990 when she later taught for Canton High School from 1991 until 2010. After retiring from the Canton High School, she continued to teach for the R.O.E. Alternative School until May of 2020. As many people knew she loved everything to do with the University of Illinois. She was a loyal booster for countless years. She also was member and supporter for the Canton Booster Club and was a past board member for the traveling baseball team. Barb enjoyed swimming, gardening, mowing her lawn, and the St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed going to all sporting events whether it be her kids, grandkids, any Canton sports and of Course the U of I. Most of all "Momma Schoon" loved teaching all of the students she had over the years and spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will be held at Lakeview Events Center in Canton 1920 North Main Street on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Donations in Barb's name can be made to Canton High School with funds to be used for supplies and technology to enhance the education of students beyond everyday classroom materials.
