Donald Lee Stufflebeam, 94, of Lewistown, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at his home. He was born on September 15, 1922 to Everett and Amy (Irwin) Stufflebeam. He married Evelyn Duckwiler on April 16, 1950. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Alan (Gaylene) Stufflebeam of Farmington, Della Gillespie of Pekin, and Marjorie Bayless of Creve Ceour; nine grandchildren, Rodney (Rayleen) Stufflebeam, Robyn Stufflebeam, Michael Stufflebeam, Terry Gillespie, Connie Gillespie, Laura (Tom) Forehand, Brian (Libby) Gillespie, Thomas White, and Angela (Luke) Potter; and several great-grandchildren, OllieBea (Andy) Crossman, Audre Nebergall, Todd Stufflebeam, Blake Stufflebeam, Adrianna Stufflebeam, Brennan Potter, Ella Potter, Scarlett Potter, Easton Potter, Zachary Gillespie, Matthew Gillespie, Amy (Steven) White, Angela Stufflebeam, Jeffrey Thompson, and Jordan Thompson; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kenneth Stufflebeam; and two sisters, Nora Smith and Barbara Peters; one daughter, Carolyn Smith; and son, Tom Stufflebeam.
Donald was a 2nd lieutenant in the Army, 8th Air Force. He flew B-17’s in the 34th Bomb Group during WWII. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in Lewistown, and he was a member of the American Legion Post 1 and the VFW Post 5001 in Lewistown. He worked as a welder for International Harvester in Canton for 32 years. He enjoyed working on cars and houses and could fix almost anything. He especially loved watching his grandchildren’s and great-children’s activities and spending time with his family, regaling them with stories about the war. Don was a very hard working man and a gentle, loving soul who spent his life helping others.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, May 12, 2017 at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church in rural Lewistown. Visitation from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with service and graveside military honors immediately to follow. Memorials can be made to the VFW Post 5001, Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, or Comfort Plus Hospice. Cremation rites will be accorded with Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL.
