Canton – Larry W. Ernst, 74, of Canton, passed away at 2:33 AM on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born on October 1, 1942 in DuQuoin, IL to Oscar W. and Irene (Manis) Ernst. He married Elizabeth Ann Thomas on October 24, 1974, she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Michelle (Dustin) Meier of Bandon, OR, Angel (Mike) Roberts of Canton, and Samantha Ernst of Pekin; six grandchildren, Matthew Ernst, Darrion Behrendt, Jordan Ernst, Rheina Ernst, Hunter Roberts, and Gage Roberts; and one sister, Ruth (Bill) Maxson of Canton.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Larry W. Ernst Jr.
Larry first worked at Freeman United Coal Company, then worked for Hennepin Steel Mill, and lastly worked at Caterpillar Mapleton Foundry, where he retired in 1999. He was of the Baptist faith. Larry was a member of American Legion Post #16, Sons of American Legion, Elks Lodge 626, Gear Jammers, and the Masons Landcaster Lodge #0106.
Larry served in the Air Force from 1962-1966.
Masonic rites will be held at 1:00 PM with funeral services following on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1995 N. Main St., Canton, IL, where a visitation will be from 11-1 PM. Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. A celebration of life will immediately follow the services at American Legion Post #16 in Canton, IL. Memorials can be made to American Legion Post #16 or American Cancer Society.
