Trivoli – Shirley J. Hedden passed away peacefully at Unity Point Methodist Hospital in Peoria at 7:15 PM Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the age of 87.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil of Trivoli; her son, Scott (Diane) Hedden of Trivoli; grandson, Brett J. (Kirsten) Hedden of Lake Camelot; and great grandson, Kyle Fremont Hedden.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Shirley was born on October 2, 1927 in Trivoli to Fremont and Mabel (Lapsley) Opie. She graduated from Farmington Community High School in 1945 and married Virgil L. Hedden on February 26, 1950 in Trivoli.
A lifelong resident of Trivoli, she began working for her father’s bank, Trivoli State Bank (now Heritage Bank), in May 1945. Through her years with the bank, she held the positions of bookkeeper, head teller, Asst. Cashier, and Vice-President, retiring in 1992. She also served on the Bank’s Board of Directors for 36 years.
Shirley was a dedicated wife and mother. She lived her entire life in the Trivoli area. After marriage, she lived on both the Hedden and Opie family farms with the love of her life, Virgil. Outside of her family, her passion in life was traveling. During her lifetime she was fortunate to have visited all 50 states. In her retirement years, she traveled extensively overseas. She visited the Swiss Alps, cruised the Panama Canal, climbed the Acropolis in Greece, and rode a camel in Australia. She was always planning her next trip until age and time finally caught up to her.
In addition to traveling the world, she loved to spend time in the winter at their trailer near West Palm Beach, Florida as she loved the ocean and the beach.
Shirley also loved singing and dancing and was a member of the Canton Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus for many years. Her love of music ranged from the Glenn Miller Band to Elvis. The last major trip she was able to make was to Memphis and Elvis’ home, Graceland, for her 80th birthday.
She was a lifelong member of the Trivoli United Methodist Church where she was active with the TUMC Evening Circle. She also was a member of the Peoria County Homemakers, Prairie Quilters, and Farmington Red Hats. For several years, she also served on the finance committee of the Rural Peoria County Council on Aging.
