Robert “Bob” D. Beckner Sr., passed away peacefully on Friday, September 3, 2021 at his daughter’s home in Carrollton, Texas. He was born on June 17, 1927 in Union Township, Fulton County, Bablyon Bend, Illinois to Carl Kellough and Luella Rebecca (Melvin) Beckner. He met and married Patricia Ann Wright on August 19, 1951. She preceded him in death in 2000 after 49 years of marriage.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl K. Becker Jr. of Crystal City, FL; one sister, Colleen (John) Lacey II of Pekin, IL; Brother-in-laws; Don (Diva) Wright of Farmington, IL and Dick Wright of Woodlands, TX; one nephew; very special friend, Sandy Daley.
Bob is survived by two children, Robert D. (Vicki) Beckner Jr. of Minier, IL and Judith Ann-Beckner (Tom) Mast of Carrollton, TX; six grandchildren, Shannon (Elton Boone) Beckner of Columbia MO; Jessica (Tim) Norris of O’Fallon, MO; Erik (Jackie) Beckner of Bloomington, Il; Ryan Mast; Heidi Mast; Andrew Mast all of Carrollton, TX; six great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emerson Boone; Tyler and Carter Norris; Finnegan and McKenzie Beckner; one brother, Kent L. (Vickie) Beckner of Canton, IL; sister-in-law, Jean Wright of Woodlands, TX; several cousins, six nieces and six nephews; and like family Doug and Mendy Kepler and Mike Reith.
Bob grew up in Middle Grove area and went to Rural Schools before attending Farmington High School for 2 years and then Canton High School for 2 years. His senior year in High School he had worked in Camp Ellis building sidewalks. He enlisted in the United States Navy when he was just 17 years old, skipping his graduation ceremony so he could serve his Country. After discharge from the Navy he went to work for International Harvester Company and then worked at McLuckie’s Store for 7 years. He eventually opened a Standard Oil Service Station on 5Th and Chestnut which he operated for 11 plus year.
Bob and Pat opened Beckner’s Mens and Boys Wear in January, 1964.
During their years in Business Bob was an active member in many Organizations:
Kiwanis Club, United Way, Board Member of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, Canton Planning and Zoning, Friend Ship Festival and Canton Sesquicentennial. He served 8 years on Fulton County Board of Supervisors. He was also a long time member and on the Board at the Canton Country Club. Active in Men’s Wear of Illinois Regional Board and in the Central Illinois Men’s Wear Group. Past Moose Lodge member. 50 year + member of the Masonic Lodge.
After retiring, Bob and Pat started quilting and enjoyed helping people with new quilts as well as fixing and appraising old ones. They loved to travel in the USA and to Europe always searching out their Genealogy along the way. He loved his bowling and golf. They spent several winters in South Texas where Bob was able to play golf. Later in life he became of member of Lakewood Golf Club where he was the youngest at 89 of his foursome.
Bob moved to Texas 7 years ago to be closer to his daughter’s family and to get away from the cold winters. He enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends at his apartment complex. He was looking forward to moving back to Fort Worth with his daughter’s family in December.
Bob had so many close friends and family that he loved; he did not want to leave, but he said several times before his death that it was time for him to go home.
Service will be held at 12 PM on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. A visitation will be held from 10 AM – 12 PM. Pastor Dean Austin will officiate. Masonic and Military rites will be accorded. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, IL. Memorials may be made to St. Jude, USO, Arbor Day Foundation, or the Humane Society of Fulton Co.
