Robert Lee Smith, 82, of Peoria, passed away at 1:17 AM on Monday, February 08, 2016 at UnityPoint Health Methodist in Peoria. He was born on December 29, 1933 in Astoria to Homer and Lucille (Walton) Smith. He first married Barbara Post on January 9, 1954 in Canton; she preceded him in death on August 21, 2001. He then married Marie Emily Zook on June 1, 2003 in Peoria, she survives.
Also surviving are three children, Gloria (Frank) Smith-Duryea of Hanna City, IL, Kerry (Kathy) Smith of Canton, IL, and Kathy Ridenour of Loveland, CO; four grandchildren, Nick (Krista) Smith of Canton, Natalie Smith of Canton, Sara Ridenour of Fort Collins, CO, and Bailee Ridenour of Loveland, CO; one brother Homer (Julia) Smith Jr. of Canton; and two sisters, Patty (Alan) Greer of Simpsonville, SC, and Judy (Tom) Beaven of Simpsonville, SC.
Preceding him in death are his parents, first wife Barbara, two sisters, Eloise Seckman of Rushville, IL, and Wanda Wells of New Burgh, IN, and nephew, Steven Seckman.
Robert worked as a foreman in tools and supplies at Caterpillar in East Peoria. He was of Baptist faith. Robert enjoyed reading, woodwork, shooting black powder guns, going to rendezvous’s, gardening, traveling, making knives, mushrooming, watching westerns, going to family reunions, walking hand in hand with Emily, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 AM on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton, where a visitation will be from 10-11 AM. Rev. Kevin VanTine will be the officiate. Burial will follow services at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton. Memorials can be made to Illinois Cancer Care or Donor’s Choice.
