Larry Leon Horner, 80, of Summum, IL, went to his eternal resting place at 11:47 am on Monday, September 22, 2025, at his home. He was born the son of Lloyd “Ping” and Dorothy (Engle) Horner, on July 18, 1945, at their home in Marbletown, IL. On January 30, 1967, Larry married Sandra Duckwiler in Summum, whom he had two daughters with. He later married Gloria (Clanin) Parker on December 23, 1994, also in Summum.Larry joined the U. S. Navy at the age of 17 & proudly served his country for 6 years. During his 4 years of active duty (1962-1966), he was stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA & was also aboard the USS Mattaponi (AO-41). In 1966, he transferred to the Reserves and was stationed in Bainbridge, MD, until he was Honorably Discharged in 1968, with 2 Medals: National Defense Service Medal & Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam).
After the Service, he worked at Colbert’s Gas Station & IDOT, until he found his full-time career at Caterpillar (Building KK) in East Peoria, where he retired after 31 years. After retiring from CAT, he drove a semi for L&N Industries for 15 years.
Larry was an avid music lover of all genres, and he was quite the dancer. He enjoyed watching TV, especially the Price is Right & the Wheel of Fortune, but has also recently become a fan of watching NFL. He also enjoyed tinkering with lawn mowers, cars & pretty much anything with an engine. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cheering them on at their sporting events.
Larry was a member of the Astoria American Legion Post #25, and a member of the Summum Christian Church. Years ago, he was a volunteer on the Summum Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three daughters, Angela (and the late Bobby) Blickenstaff, Tammy (and Scott) Kinkead, and Kisha (and Jeremy Taylor) Stambaugh; seven grandchildren, Klynton Bollinger, Aubri (and Blake) Scheland, Destini Bollinger, Mason (and Tristan) Blickenstaff, Elli Taylor, Skye Stambaugh, and Tucker Stambaugh; eight great-grandchildren, Oscar Jones, Jeffrey Bollinger, Parker Stewart, Huntlee Bollinger, Londyn Hillyer, Adalynn Scheland, Cohen Blickenstaff, and Jeramy Hillyer; three sisters, Janice Snowden, Sandra Morse and Martha Gray; and two brothers, Richard (and Ann) Horner and Gary (and Sharla) Horner.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd E. Horner and Ralph Horner; and son-in-law, Bobby Blickenstaff.
Visitation will be held 10 am-12 pm, with Funeral Services immediately following, on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Bob Spencer will officiate. Interment will be in the Summum Cemetery.
