Gilbert LeRoy Hickle, age 91 of Astoria, IL, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at his home in Astoria. He was born on September 24, 1927 in Vermont, IL, the son of Theodore Roosevelt and Lucille (Brown) Hickle. He married Ruby Angeline Bowman on February 2, 1947 in Peoria Heights, IL. She preceded him in death on January 18, 2017.
He was also preceded in death by his son Michael, his grandsons, James and Shawn Hickle, his great-granddaughter Liberty Ann Hickle, four brothers, Stanley, James, Richard, and Steven Hickle, and his sisters, Peggy Holmes and Laura Hickle.
Gilbert is survived by two sons, James (and Kathy) Hickle of Astoria and David (and Kim) Hickle of Bushnell, IL, two daughters, Mary (and Herb) Dilts of Marietta, IL and Shelley (and Bob) Haare of Astoria, 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren and his sister Mary Ellen Farwell of Astoria.
He worked as a coal miner for AMAX Coal Company at Sunspot Mine in the early 1960's. When the mine closed he chose retirement. He and his wife Ruby then opened The Old Orchard Store in Vermont, IL..
Gilbert was a member of the Vermont United Methodist Church in Vermont, IL where he served on the church board. He also was a member of the Vermont Town Board for several years.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. at the Vermont United Methodist Church. Pastor Bennett Woods will officiate. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 26th from 6-8 p.m. at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Road, Ashland, MT 59003.
