Shirley Thurman

Shirley Thurman, 86, of Canton, passed away at 4:17 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Heritage Woods Assisted Living in Canton. She was born on March 17, 1939 in Virigina, Illinois, a daughter of Ruel and Elizabeth (Williams) Crouse. She married Chester E. “Chet” Thurman on July 3, 1956 in Canton. He preceded her in death on August 24, 2019 in Canton.

Also, preceding Shirley in death were her parents, five brothers, James, Robert, Ruel, Virgil, and William Crouse; one sister, Mary Reeder.

Surviving are her children, Michael Thurman of Farmington; Barb (Mark) Long of Canton; three grandchildren, Jason (Brooke) Thurman, Nicholas Stanley, April (Joe) Allen; fourteen great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ron (Nancy) Crouse of Fairview; Kenny (Maureen) Crouse of Alabama; Carroll (Joyce) Crouse of Macomb, and sister, Patricia (Crouse) Wood of Alabama.

Shirley worked in the clothing department at Canton Farm King for many years, and was a member of Norris United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling with the Farm King Women’s League, playing cards, and loved spending time in Texas with her husband.

Per Shirley’s wishes, there will be no services, and cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory. Burial of ashes will take place in Norris Cemetery at a later date with her husband Chet. Memorials can be made to the Norris United Methodist Church.
