Donna J. Orwig

Donna J.Orwig, 91, of Smithfield passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice House.

Donna was born on November 14, 1930 in Broadmoor Heights, IL to Allen and Edna (Darnell) Askew. She married Sheldon Orwig on March 21, 1948 and he preceded her in death on December 16, 2000.

She is survived by a daughter, Toni Orwig-Strode (Larry) of Fairview, IL and a son, Troy Orwig (Barbara) of Sullivan, IN. She is also survived by grandchildren, Cory Strode, Kimberly (Curt) Linderman, Kambria (Darin) Sharkey, Kristin (Michael) Aigner, Jeremy (Sarah) Orwig, Joshua (Edie) Orwig, Jordan (Ally) Orwig, Katelyn (Justin) Ward, Amie (Josh) Gossage and Carly (Eddie) Smith. Great-grandchildren: Michael (Darcy) Strode, Kassidy LInderman, Kaden Linderman, C J Linderman, Destiny Linderman, Mindy (David ) Engle, Derek Hahn, Elizabeth Aigner, Jane Orwig, Joe Orwig, Matilda Orwig, Anne Orwig, Beatrix Orwig, Hazel Orwig, Ivy Orwig, Micaela Windsor, Taylor Windsor, Duncan Gossage, Lucas Gossage, Imogen Gossage, Alora Gossage, Jack Smith and Shade Smith. Great, great-grandchildren: Greyson Barse, Juliet Barse, Scarlett Engle and Sebastian Engle, one sister, Dolores Engstrom of Peoria, and one brother, Allen Askew of Skokie.

She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy, a grandson, Christopher Strode and a great-grandson Gregory Hahn.

Donna worked side by side with Sheldon on a grain and livestock farm in the Smithfield area. She also worked for the United States Postal Service as a part time clerk and as a substitute carrier. She was eventually promoted to Postmistress at the Bardolph, IL post office and ultimately the Postmistress at the Smithfield post office from which she retired.

Upon retirement, she enjoyed quilting, working on jig saw puzzles and traveling. But most of all, she enjoyed her family and any and all activities with them, especially large family meals where everyone gathered around her table.

She was a member of the Brock United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was treasurer for many years. She was also village clerk for the village of Smithfield. She was a life-long member of the Neighborly Circle Club.

Visitation will be at the Henry-Lange Funeral Home in Cuba, IL on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be at the Brock United Methodist Church in Smithfield, IL on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM with a meal at the Red Brick School following services. Burial will take place at a later date with a private family service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Cass – Putman Rescue Squad, Cuba, IL.
