John Carter Wertman, 91, of Canton, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba.
He was born on August 1, 1929, in Canton to Carter E. and Flossie (Shafer) Wertman.
John is survived by his wife of 71 years, Alma Lee (Linn) Wertman. They were married on September 4, 1949 in Canton.
Also surviving are three children, Lynn (Kevin) Brooks of Canton, Nancy (Jeff) Hendryx of Morton and Janet (Mike) Krulac of Canton, brother in law Gordon (Pat) Linn, seven grandchildren, Nick (Jessica) Brooks, Nate (Sarah) Brooks, Kaylee (Sean) Blair, Luke (Erin) Overcash, Ty (Colleen) Overcash, Tess (Stephen) Whiting and Zack (Ashley) Krulac, and ten great grandchildren, Bailey, Carter and Cad Brooks, Briggs, Kenzie, Charlotte and Lennon Overcash, and Colette and Lincoln Krulac, and one great grandchild Whiting on the way.
Also preceding him in death is one grandson, Cody Krulac.
John received an associate’s degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois. He was a cattle and grain farmer in Fulton County throughout his life. He won the Outstanding Young Farmer award for the state of Illinois, he was a 4-H leader for the Lucky-13 Club. He was a bank director for Mid America National Bank. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canton for 72 years and was a board member of the Canton YMCA where he also previously had refereed basketball. He was also a past member and president of the Friendship Festival board and the Fulton County Ambulance board. John also was a member of the Canton Masonic Lodge. Most of all John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
A private family service will be held with Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.
