Donald E. Whelan, 87, of Chillicothe, formerly of Elmwood, passed away at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at Methodist Hospital in Peoria. He was born on February 16, 1933, to Francis and Myrtle (Hill) Whelan in Peoria. He married Mary Emery on September 20, 1952, in Elmwood. She survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Mary (John) Fullen of Chillicothe, and Sheralyn "Sherry" Whelan of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Whelan; one sister, Frances Stenger; and one great-grandchild, Luke Rynearson.
Donald was a Claims Manager at Bituminus Insurance and a former member of the Greater Peoria Claims Association for 40 years. Donald served in the Army during the Korean War and was able to be part of the Veterans Honor Flight. He was also a 30-year member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Elmwood V. F.W. Most recently, he was a member of the Pearce Community Center. He was also baptized on the day he passed away.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, February 5, 2021, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will immediately follow the service at Elmwood Township Cemetery.
