Genevieve Isobel Porter
Canton – Genevieve Isobel Porter, 103, of Canton, passed away from this life at 3:44 PM on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at her home. She was born on May 1, 1916 in Colchester, IL, the daughter of Samuel Thomas Webster and Bertha Vawter Webster. She married William B. Porter on July 17, 1945.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, George, Marion, Cecil, and Gaylord, sister, Grace Justus, and her daughter, Rebecca Ann Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Lee Porter of Alton; daughter, Rosanna Waters of Canton; and son, Scott (Laurie) Hughes of Canton; 10 grandchildren, Terri Porter Cameron (Stace) of Springfield, Julie Porter Ross (Clifford) of Alton, Ricky Nolley of Shelbyville, IN, Lora Pugh of Nashville, TN, Jason Hughes of Canton, Christina Chatterton of Pekin, Eric Hughes of Canton, Tami Johnson Sells (Lane) of Otterbein, IN, Jimmy Johnson of Florence, IN, and Dollie Johnson of Otterbein, IN; 17 great-grandchildren; and dear lifelong friends, Joe and Sharon Ginger of Canton.
Genevieve was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Canton. She lovingly welcomed over 50 foster children into her home over the years, and loved children, cooking, sewing, and crafts. Genevieve continues to create crafts and share them with family, friends, and churches until a few months before her death.
Services will be held at 2 PM on Monday, June 3, 2019 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Pastor Greg Ogle will officiate. Burial will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton, IL. Memorials can be made to National Association of Social Workers or to the charity of choice.
