Maurice F. Cox
Maurice Francis "Maurie" Cox, age 83 of Vermont, IL, passed away at 8:58 pm Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL. He was born on February 11, 1936 on the family farm in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, just west of Vermont, the son of Arthur and Twila (Ruth) Cox. Maurie married Kathy Cozadd on September 11, 1961 in Summum, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Laura (and Mike) Seamster of Hopewell, IL, Marisa (and Jerry) Nutt of Greensboro, NC, and Jody (and Eric) Trone of Elmwood, IL, nine grandchildren; Christopher Seamster, Joshua Seamster, Cassie (and David) Nolte, Janessa Seamster, Alexandra (and Josh) Sanders, Jarred (and Melinda) Nutt, Emma Trone, John Trone, and Jack Trone, twelve great-grandchildren, two sisters, Maxine Leezer of Canton, IL and Cheryl (and Gary) Matteson of Vermont, IL and two brothers, Marcus (and Frances) Cox of Cuba, IL and George (and Natalie) Cox of Lewistown, IL.
Maurie was preceded in death by one brother, Max Cox.
He was a rural mail carrier and also a bus driver.
He served in the US Army from September 25, 1958 to September 22, 1960 with the 503rd Administration Company with a rank of SP-4. While in the Army, Maurie was a postman and even delivered a letter addressed to Elvis Presley while he was stationed in Germany.
Maurie was a member of the Vermont Christian Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and was Chairman of the Church Board when the Family Life Center was constructed.
He also was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Vermont, where he served as Noble Grand. He volunteered for Hospice and the Vermont American Legion Color Guard. He also was a Scoutmaster.
In high school, Maurie received the SAR Award and loved playing sports, participating in them all, including the pole vault in track and field.
He enjoyed playing golf, even attaining a hole-in-one on one occasion. He enjoyed playing cards and playing games and being active in his grandchildren's lives.
Maurie was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Services for Maurie will be on Tuesday, May 28th at 10 am at the Vermont Christian Church. Pastors Cody Stinnett and Tim Gilliland will officiate. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 26th from 3-6 pm at the Vermont Christian Church's Family Life Center. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Vermont Christian Church's Food Pantry or Donor's Choice.
