Harold E. Malott


Harold Edgar Malott, age 87 of Astoria, IL, passed away at 4:35 am on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at his home. He was born on October 9, 1931 in Bernadotte Township, Fulton County, IL, the son of Hiram and Bertha (Hendee) Malott. Harold married Donna Wys on October 27, 1950 in Lewistown, IL. She preceded him in death on October 7, 1983. He then married Geraldine Piotrowski on December 22, 1984 in Pinckneyville, IL. She preceded him in death on May 10, 2015.

Harold was also preceded in death by two brothers, an infant and Hiram Malott, and two sisters, Ruby Gobel and Margie Wilson.

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa (and Scott) Burget and Beverly (and Gary) Taylor, both of Rushville, IL, his special friend Dorla Hayes of Astoria, IL, three grandchildren; Brandy Burget, Nathan Burget, and Miranda Taylor, one great-granddaughter Addalynn Burget, one step-son Stephen Piotrowski of Tamaroa, IL, three step-daughters; Julia (and Raymond) Bathon of Pinckneyville, IL, Deborah (and Steven) Kellerman of Tamaroa, IL, Donna Piotrowski of Tamaroa, IL, eight step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Clyde (and Sharon) Malott and John (and Millie) Malott, both of Lewistown, IL and one sister Doris (and Jim) Case of Peoria, IL.

Harold was an Army veteran, serving from 1952 to 1954 with a rank of Corporal.

He was a lifelong farmer.

He worked mine construction at the Peabody Coal Mine in Rushville, IL. He was a welder at AMAX Coal Company's Sun Spot Mine in Vermont, IL. He also worked for the Leighy Mine in Willisville, IL and Wabash Mine in Mt. Carmel, IL. Harold retired from mining in 1992.

Harold was a member of the UMWA, the UAW and the Carroll Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont, IL.

Harold loved to play cards and visit the casinos and gambling boats. He also enjoyed tinkering with his tractors.

Services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Shawgo Memorial home in Astoria, IL. Pastor Jeremy Westlake will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16th from 5-7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery with full military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Astoria South Fulton Senior Center or the Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice.
