Canton
– William “Bill” D. Hays, 91, of Canton, passed away on Thursday, February 19,
2015, at the Graham Hospital in Canton.
He
was born on December 22, 1923 in Canton to Verne and Lela O’Brien Hays.
He
married Peggy L. Tuckey on November 17, 1952 in Grenada, MS. She survives.
Also
surviving is his sister in law Judy Hays of San Antonio, TX and his niece Susan
Henimeier.
He
was preceded in death by his brother, T.C. Hays and one niece Christine
Henimeier.
Bill
attended Canton Schools and the University of Iowa in Iowa City before serving
in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII.
After the war he returned to Canton and worked for International
Harvester from which he retired in 1982 with 37 years of service.
He
was a member of the Mohammad Temple of the Shrine, Masonic Lodge #734, Canton
American Legion and its 40 et 8, Elks Lodge #626 and the 1st
Christian Church in Canton where he was the longest living member.
Bill
and Peggy loved to travel and always enjoyed spending the summer in Michigan at
their cottage on the lake. Bill was a
great man and anyone who knew him was blessed.
He always had a smile and a good word.
A
visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, from 9 am-11am, at the
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a Masonic service at 11 A.M. at the
funeral home. A funeral service will
follow with the burial with military honors at the White Chapel Memory Gardens
in Canton.
Memorials
may be made to Shriners Hospital or to his church.
