Gilbert Harman
Trivoli – Gilbert G. Harman, 91, of Trivoli passed away at 4:12 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria.
He was born March 14, 1925, in rural Trivoli to Gerald and Vesta (Troxel) Harman. He married Shirley Clauson on March 16, 1956, in Farmington.
Gilbert lived most of his life in various places along South Stone School Road, except for a few years when his family lived Southwest of Farmington. He graduated from Stone School and Farmington High School in 1943.
He was a 69-year member of the Odd Fellow Lodge #44 and a 65-year member of the Farmington Masonic Lodge #192. He enjoyed his work in both lodges, especially their Spoon River Drive booths. He was also a member of the Farmington Moose Lodge.
Gilbert was a lifelong member of the Farmington United Methodist Church. He served on several boards and did little jobs such as hauling coal for the furnace and handing out rolls at the ham loaf dinners.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; one brother, Lewis Harman, and many nieces and nephews. To some he was known as “Uncle GG”. Others knew him as the uncle who would give them a stick of Juicy Fruit gum if they promised to be a Democrat. A specific nephew and his family, Doug, Dawn, Kostas, Joel and Reid, helped him stay on the farm with their many acts of kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine Oldfield; and one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Harman.
Gilbert enjoyed playing cards, antique tractors, and traveling. The Prairieland Steam Show in Jacksonville was the highlight of his year. He also enjoyed working on the Rose Parade float and watching the Chicago Cubs spring training.
Gilbert was a farmer, starting at the young age of seventeen and an independent trucker, hauling livestock, grain, and fertilizers.
He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.
Funeral services, with Masonic Rites, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington.
Memorials may be made to Logan-Trivoli Rescue Squad, Farmington Rescue 1100, or Farmington United Methodist Church.
