Ronald G. “Ronnie” Bankes, 85, of Canton passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at Red Oak Estates Memory Care in Canton.
He was born on April 27, 1935, in Leesburg to Harold and Alberta (Larimore) Bankes. They preceded him in death.
He married Joan Messer on April 17, 1954. She preceded him in death on June 27, 2020, after 66 years of marriage.
Also preceding him in death were one brother, Robert Bankes; and one granddaughter, Nicole Rabe.
Surviving are three children, Pam (Mike) Rabe of Pekin; Kevin (Denise) Bankes of Canton; and Mendy (Frank) Jones of Canton; one sister, Marilyn Madson of Lewistown; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Ronnie retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 649, where he was a member for over 40 years. In earlier years, he was a painter, and worked at Key Motors, then at Orwig Autobody as an autobody repairman. In his retirement, he continued his love of restoring vehicles, both for himself and for friends. He spent many hours helping friends in the restoration of their vehicles. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming and gardening, especially growing roses, mums and dahlias. He was also a member of 1st Christian Church in Canton.
He was a member of the Gear Jammers car club, as well as Morning Star Masonic Lodge 734, where he was a 45-year member.
Services will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at 10:30 am, at Oaks Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton, where visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. Covid 19 mandates will be followed with social distancing and facial masks required.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
