John Senn Soldwedel


 John Senn Soldwedel, 95, of Canton, passed away on January 9, 2021 at his home in Canton.

He was born to Carl F. and Isabel (Senn) Soldwedel on April 12, 1925 in Pekin, IL. John married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Elaine Mummert on October 21, 1945.

He is survived by his sister, Martha Claudon, and children; Stephen Soldwedel of Canton and Minneapolis, MN, John Soldwedel (Lydia Kuhn) of Naperville, IL, and Janet Swanson of Parker, CO; his grandchildren, Brooke (Adam) Hunia of Elmhurst, IL, Senn (Sara) Soldwedel of Libertyville, IL, and Nicholas (Laura) Swanson of Englewood, CO; and his five great grandsons, Brady and Connor Hunia, Senn Jr. and Jack Soldwedel, and Leo Swanson. He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend for 74 years, Charlotte, and his sister, Gretchen Gill.

John, "affectionately known as Jack" entered the University of Illinois in 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served as a Meteorologist at the Army Airfield in Galveston, TX and as a Sergeant in the administrative offices at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX. Jack graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Dairy Technology in 1949 and returned to Canton, where he joined the family dairy business, Soldwedels All Star Dairy.

Jack was a founding member of the Canton Community Bank and served on the board for many years.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Canton, friend of the United Church of Christ in Marco Island and Presbyterian Church of Canton. Hobbies included golf, tennis and bowling (where he met Charlotte). He was an all-around sports enthusiast, following the U of I teams, Cubs, and of course attending all of his kids' sporting events. He was an avid reader, keeping up with the news and enjoying his favorite mystery novel. John obtained his pilot's license and enjoyed being able to fly to many dairy conventions.

After retirement, Jack spent winters in FL, where he and Charlotte enjoyed golf, plays and exploring the surrounding area. He was also treasurer of his condo association for many years.

He could be a stubborn German, but had a kind heart, loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

A memorial service celebrating Jack's life, will be held at 1:30 pm Friday, January 22, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home, 1601 E. Chestnut St, Canton, IL. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be immediately after at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. The Rev. Edwin Brinklow will officiate. Memorials may be made in his name to: Canton YMCA or Canton's Meals on Wheels organization.
