Richard “Dick” L. Werry, 90, of Canton, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at his residence.
He was born on July 2, 1935 in Canton to John and Pauline (Bybee) Werry Sr.
He married Jacque Atkins on April 16, 1981. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, John Werry, Paula (Bryan) Werry-Bennett, Kevin Tomlinson, Tammy (the late Michael) Tomlinson-Fanning, brother, David (Chris) Werry, eight grandchildren, Bryce (Lori) Foster, Amanda (Shawn) Larkin, Paul Fanning, Allison (Alex) Fanning-Hailey, Ashley Fanning, Richard (Tiffany) Bennett, Emilee (Edwin) Drane, Austyn Werry-Hoegger, twenty great grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren and a bonus daughter, Diana Pasley.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bruce, one brother, John “Jack” (Loretta) Werry Jr and three sisters, Dixie LaFary, Karen Davis and Judy Melvin.
Dick served in the Navy Reserve for two years and later went into active duty in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and then received his Master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. He taught school at Pontiac Township High School, District 429 until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Pontiac and Canton. He enjoyed to fish hunt, garden and play golf.
Cremation rites have been accorded through Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.
A graveside burial of his ashes with military services will be held at 11am, on Friday, August 8, 2025 at Foster Cemetery in Rural Fairview with Rev. Ron Jasen officiating. A meal will be provided following the service at the Canton Family Restaurant in Canton.
