Ronald E. “Hardrock” Lyons, 66, of Fairview, passed away at 10:50 AM on Friday, October 26, 2018 in Canton, Illinois. Services pending with Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton.

Brian Hadsall


Canton-Brian Hadsall, 39, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018, in Peoria.

He was born on March 15, 1979, in Canton to Brian A. and Leigh Ann (Fitch) Hadsall.  They preceded him in death.

Surviving is his daughter, Makaileigh Hadsall of Texas, two sisters, Angela (Jonathan Barnett) Hadsall of Canton, Saphire (Adam) Johnson of Canton, maternal grandmother Janet Fitch, Paternal grandfather Paul
Hadsall, step father Mike Williamson, one nephew, Caiden Barnett, one niece Zarileigh Johnson with one more being expected soon and his girlfriend Christine.

Also preceding him in death is his maternal grandfather Charles Fitch, paternal grandmother Karen Scott and step mother, Roberta (Goodwin) Hadsall.

Brian enjoyed hunting, fishing and had a talent for drawing.  He was a musician and played the guitar, drums and was a skilled vocalist.  He also was an avid Cubs and Bears fan and loved making people laugh.

Brian’s passion was his family.

A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton from 11am -1 pm.

A graveside burial of the ashes will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Margaret Hill



Mendota-Margaret E. Hill, 90, formerly of Canton, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Mendota, IL.
She was born on July 26, 1928 in McDonough County to Charles and Flora (Simpson) Orwig.  They preceded her in death.
She married Donald G. Hill on June 15, 1948 in Galesburg.  He preceded her in death on April 4, 1992.
Surviving are her children, Carol Lynn (Robert) Davis of Davenport, FL, Janet Kay Hill of Mendota, Donna Rae Howdeshell of Mendota, Wanda Jene (Kenneth) Moore of Weldon, IL, Nancy Anne (Thomas) Morrisey of Kissimmee, FL, one brother, Charles (Jeanne) Orwig of Kewanee, one sister Mildred Krueter of Aurora, CO, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great great grandsons.
Also preceding her in death is one sister Martha Evans.
Margaret was born and raised in Galesburg and was a graduate of Galesburg High School.  She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at 1pm at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton with a visitation one hour prior at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at the Prairie City Cemetery.

John "Auggie" R. O'Connell, Sr.


John "Auggie" R. O'Connell, Sr., 77, of Canton passed away at 3:05 a.m., on Sunday, October 21, 2018.
He was born on August 11, 1941, in Peoria, to Dick Clark and Pat (Haggard) Glossick. He married Beverly (Book) O'Connell, on June 20, 1979, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on February 25, 2010.
He is survived by five children, Crystal (Delbert) Plain of Edwards, John R. (Shelli) O'Connell, Jr., of Maquon, Kelly (Doug Bowman) O'Connell of Canton, Larry O'Connell of Canton, and Matthew (Leslie) Smith of Peoria; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Dan O'Connell; one brother, Larry Gene O'Connell; and one great-grandchild, Damion Terrell.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Friday, October 26, 2018, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood. A private burial with military rites will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Humane Society and Veterans Affairs.

Harry Wayne Whitmer


Canton – Harry Wayne Whitmer, 71, of Canton, passed away at 9:15 PM on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Graham Hospital. He was born on December 10, 1946 in Canton to Frank and Mattie (Hedge) Whitmer.

Surviving are five children, Carroll (Lorie) Whitmer of Cuba, Corbin (Mandy) Whitmer of TX, Joe Whitmer of PA, Clint (Janie) Whitmer of Cuba, and Missy (Jeff) Grapes of East Peoria; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joan Ladoucer of CA, Vicki Jennings of TN, and Robin Bassaham of FL; several nieces and nephews; longtime family friend, Ryan Alexander.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Ashley Dawn, and two brothers.

Harry worked at Keystone Steel and Wire for 20 years and also was a truck driver for various companies for 20 years. He was of the Christian faith. Harry was a member of Farmington Moose Lodge 1571, Canton VFW Post 1984, Farmington American Legion Post 140, and was a lifetime member of Amvets.

Harry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Erin Renee Davis


Erin Renee Davis, 41 of Elmwood, IL passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018. She was born September 24, 1977, to Steve and Kay Clark of Yates City, IL, at St. Francis Medical Center. Erin married Bryan Davis on October 30, 1999, in Prescott, AZ, after a four year courtship. He survives, along with their two beautiful daughters, Olivia Bryanne, 18, and Isabelle Renee, 11, all of Elmwood, IL. Also, surviving are her parents, two sisters: Ashley(Corey) Geeseman of Elmwood, IL and Amanda(Matthew) Breaux of Dahinda, IL; mother-in-law Connie Davis of Bakersfield, CA; father-in-law Scott(Yvonne) Davis of Brimfield, IL; sister-in-law Keri(Greg) Boyer of Bakersfield, CA; and nieces and nephews, Paige and Mason Geeseman, Aiden Breaux and Peyton and Paisley Boyer.
Erin worked as a dental assistant with Associates In Dentistry, she and Bryan operated Here We Grow/Davis Landscaping Service, and most recently, she was employed by Farmers State Bank, all of Elmwood, IL.
Erin enjoyed spending time with her husband and daughters. She loved going on long, country drives with Bryan and finding new destinations. He was her anchor and they valued the hard work necessary to maintain their relationship. Erin's unbreakable bond with her daughters was undeniable. She relished in the role of motherhood and invested herself in any school projects or interests in which her daughters were involved. Erin consistently surrounded her children with love, affection, and attention.
Erin cherished her role as an older sister. As an adult, she became her sisters' self-appointed life coach/caregiver as well as her nieces' and nephews' second mother. Erin was always available to talk through obstacles and never asked for anything in return. She always inspired a positive self-image and empowered everyone to meet their full potential.
She extended love and support to all of her family and friends. She maintained friendships well into adulthood which began early in her youth, and she is survived by her closest friend, Salina Durst.
She had the most amazing laugh, and her fun spirit and sense of humor, along with her optimistic energy, brightened the spirits of everyone around her. She was selfless, and extended help to anyone in need. Erin was truly beautiful inside and out, she will be missed more than anyone can express.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Erin's Life will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Maple Lane Country Club in Elmwood.

Bushnell – Megan M. Worley, 26, of Bushnell, passed away at 3:34 PM on Saturday, October 20, 2018 in Havana, IL. She was born on June 3, 1992 in Macomb to Ryan Grimm and Nicole (Day) Bohanan. They survive.

Also surviving is her step-father, Chad Bohanan; two brothers, Mitchell Worley of Macomb and Marcus Fowler of Canton; two nephews, Jackson and Owen.

Megan was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, one uncle, and one aunt.

Megan worked as an LPN at Illinois River Department of Corrections.

Deloris Wardell


Smithfield-Deloris Wardell, 90, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Graham Hospital in Canton.
She was born on January 29, 1928 in Eagle River, WI, to William and Beulah (Streeter) Rogers. They preceded her in death.
She married Bernard Tracey and later married Lyle Wardell. They preceded her in death.
Surviving are her children, Pamela Derry-Grubb of Canton, Kevin Tracey of Canton, step children, John, Joan, Jim and Jeff Wardell, one brother, Daniel Rogers of Eagle River, WI and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two children, Gloria Beckett, Diana Smizer, five brothers, Victor, Raphael "Bud", William, Lowell and Chancey and two sisters, Reva and Venona.
Deloris worked as a nurse's aid in the emergency department at Graham Hospital for over 20 years. She enjoyed fishing and crocheting. She was a member of the Nazarene Church in Smithfield and was active in the Cuba Senior Community Center.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Smithfield.

Dorothy M. Roseboom


Farmington – Dorothy M. Roseboom, 94, of Farmington, passed away at 7:45 PM on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville, IL. She was born on September 2, 1924 in Farmington to Louis and Amelia (Crossetti) Morotti. She married Raymond L. Roseboom on February 24, 1951 in Farmington, he preceded her in death on May 25, 2006.

Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gene Morotti.

Surviving are two children, Stacey (Andy) Rock of Jacksonville and Chad (Patti) Roseboom of Springfield, IL and four grandchildren, Peyton and Sydney Rock, Kate (Josh) Blankenship, and Kristin (Chris) Beyer.

Dorothy retired from the Farmington Post Office in 1987. She attended First Baptist Church in Farmington. Dorothy was the past President of the Farmington Legion Auxiliary and color bearer for many years. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose in Farmington.

Services will be held at 12 PM on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington, where a visitation will be held from 11-12 PM. Rev. Monroe Bailey will officiate. Russell Dean Bedwell


Canton – Russell Bedwell, 82, of Canton passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Renaissance Care Center in Canton.  He was born on July 27, 1936 in Lewistown, IL. to John and ? Bertha Bedwell.  Russell married Helen Hitchcock in 1965.  She preceded him in death in 2002.  His parents also preceded him in death.  Surviving is a son Russell Bedwell of St. David, five step children; Mary Ann Froehling of Canton, Sherry Mosher of Missouri, Jim Malone of Missouri, Steve Malone of Missouri and Chuck Pappapetru of Nevada, five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Canton – Evelyn I. Beaird, 91, of Canton, passed away at 11:10 AM on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Heartland Health Care in Canton, IL. She was born on December 6, 1926 in Rural Marietta, IL to Robert J. and Idella (Haffner) Thompson. She married William “Bill” Beaird on August 21, 1949 in Bushnell, IL. He survives.

Also surviving are three children, William L. (Ralynn) Beaird of Bartonville, Daniel A. (Geralyn) Beaird of Canton, and Sandra “Sue” (Alan) Beuster of Granite City, IL; five grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) Beaird, Andrew (Malia) Beuster, Emily (Brent) Dean, Laura (Justin) Howard, and Nathan (Emily) Beuster; four great-grandchildren, Aimee, Taylor, Ethan, and Evelyn; three sisters, Frances Smith, Zelpha Kessler, and Lois Extrell; and one sister in law, Charlotte Beaird.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert Thompson, and two sisters, Esther Still and Marjorie Singleton.

Evelyn worked as a seamstress and bookkeeper. She retired from Keefauver Grain in Fiatt. Evelyn also worked in 4H.

JoAnn Grayson


Pekin – JoAnn “Biddy” Grayson, 66, of Pekin, passed away at 5:17 PM on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Timbercreek Nursing Home in Pekin, IL. She was born on August 21, 1952 in Pekin,IL to Hubert and Mary Ellen (Eggers) Walker. She married Ross Grayson in 1972 in Peoria, IL, she got a divorce after 13 years of marriage.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Faye.

Surviving is one daughter, Alicia Rose Grayson of Pekin; one sister, Rosie Brown of Bartonville, IL; and one brother, Glen Walker of Germantown Hills.

JoAnn graduated from Woodruff High School in 1971. She worked for a short time at the Workshop in Peoria. JoAnn attended two churches, North Parkway Assembly of God and River of Life, both in Pekin. Biddy was a very loving and thoughtful person. She loved her family, relation, and friends. She will be deeply missed.

Aaron Michael Anderson


Canton – Aaron Michael Anderson, 35, of Canton, passed away at 11:45 PM on Saturday, October 13, 2018 in Havana, IL. He was born on September 22, 1983 in Canton, IL to Aaron T. and Tracy (Shryock) Anderson. They survive.

Also surviving are three children, Hanna Anderson-Davis, Grady Anderson, and Avery Anderson of Canton; one sister, Deena Anderson of Troy, IL.

Aaron worked as a correctional officer for the Illinois River Correctional Center. He was a member of the Illinois River Correctional Center Tactical Unit. Aaron graduated form Lewistown High School in 2002, and received his Bachelors Degree from Western Illinois University. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Aaron loved his kids so much.

Memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, a visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until time of service. Rev. Nancy Ellen Pickel Long


Nancy Ellen Pickel Long, 63, of Canton died peacefully on Sunday Evening, October 14, 2018 in her home. She was born June 26, 1955 in Canton, Illinois. to Harry and Ileen (Schuman) Pickel. Nancy married Henry L. Long on December 23, 1984 he survives.

Survivors include, two sister in law’s, Bertie Long-Taylor and Fannie Long-Park; one brother in law, Steven (Kathy) Long; one daughter, Melissa Long-Smith; three stepsons, Richard Long, William (Sandra) Long, and Michael (Marjorie) Long; 18 grandchildren: Madison Smith, Keonte Medley and Janiha Harris, Bethany Gahl, Thomas Long, Karen (Brian) Schoenfeld, Amanda (Ben) Williams, Teresa (Jason) Yerbic, William (Patricia) Long, Rebekah Davis, Kevin (Helen) Davis, Steven Long, Kristyn Long, Rio Long, Ian Bartolome, Mia Long, Rose Long, Noah Long; 17 great grandchildren; and many loved nieces, great nieces and nephews, great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all 4 siblings, Raymond Pickel, Norma Pickel Long, Mary Pickel, Linda Pickel; one niece, Sally (Pickel) Goodnight; two brother in laws, Elmer and Walter Long; two grandsons, Richard Long Jr. and Quentin Flower.

Nancy retired from home health in 2012.

She loved hanging out with family and friends, playing slots and bingo, and her absolute passion was watching her grandchildren grow and being a second mom to many.

Robert “Bob” C. Pittman


Robert “Bob” C. Pittman, age 88 of Astoria, IL, passed away at 10:30 am on Friday, October 12, 2018 at his home. He was born on March 23, 1930 to Arthur and Leta (Mellier) Pittman, the 4th of 8 children.

Bob graduated from Cuba High School, Cuba, IL, where he participated in 4H and FFA, earning the State Farmer Award. He graduated from McPherson College with a BS Degree in Industrial Arts and from the University of Illinois where he earned his Masters Degree in Vocational Education.

He married Marianne Rhoades on July 24, 1955 in Astoria, IL. She survives. They have three children by birth, Oralea Anne Pittman of Bellefontaine, OH, Paul Arthur (and Julie) Pittman of Woodside, CA and their daughters, Allison and Catherine, and Rhonda Kathleen (and Mark) Gingrich of Minneapolis, MN, and their daughters Sophia and Addison, Bob and Marianne’s family was enlarged and enriched by An and the late Hoa Tran, Vietnamese refugees who adopted them as their mother and father and gave them two more grandchildren, Huy (and Shama) Tran, and their son Arjun, and Linda (and Jorge) Lopez and their two children Lucas and Liliana.

Bob is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Miller of Astoria, IL and Elizabeth Gramm of Nashville, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Howard, Richard, Charles, and Arthur “Jack” Pittman and one sister Marilea Kessler.

Bob taught school for 27 years, 25 of them in Vocational Building Trades, building houses with students.

He was active in the Church of the Brethren where he held leadership positions at the local, district, and denominational level. He worked with the Church of the Brethren Disaster Ministries where he served in many states directing the work of volunteers helping in the recovery following a disaster. His teaching experience was valuable in this work. He served as a trainer for other project directors and served as Interim Director of Brethren Disaster Ministries from January 1999 to June 1999.

Bob worked as the supervisor of volunteers in the building of churches, parsonages, and church camp facilities.

His hobbies included traveling, wood crafts (especially turning rolling pins), and collecting antique tools.

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 17th at 11:00 am at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Reverends Ed Woodard, Lisa Fike, and Dan Cole will officiate. Visitation will take place from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, October 16th at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Astoria, IL. William J. "Bill" Loveland

William J. "Bill" Loveland, 75, of Norris, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018, at Unity Point Methodist Hospital.  Services are pending at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home and Crematory in Canton.

Phyllis R. Vandermeer


Phyllis R. Vandermeer passed away on October 12, 2018 after a lengthy illness. She was born on October 5, 1934, the daughter of Charles Weldon and Martha Lorraine (Luman) McClure in Canton, Illinois.

She graduated from Canton Senior High School in 1952 and married to David Eugene Vandermeer in 1955. He survives.

Also surviving are their three children, Davinda Holly (Kevin) Brown, David Weldon Vandermeer Sr., and Jordan Daniel (Kathi) Vandermeer, as well as grandchildren Rebekah Jean (Brandon) Inwood, David Weldon (Vanessa) Vandermeer Jr., Aaron Joseph Brown, and Amanda Jo Vandermeer, and great-grandchildren Emily Paige Inwood and Gunner William Vandermeer.

Preceding in her in death were her parents, grandson William Joseph Vandermeer, and daughter-in-law Linda R. Vandermeer.

She worked for Nation Bank of Canton, First Federal Savings and Loan, Midwestern Savings and Loan, and the Canton Daily Ledger. She was the secretary for the First Baptist Church of Canton and secretary for IEA, Hocker and Fitzjarrald and CDC in Peoria.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton where she was a Sunday School teacher for both youth and adults, board member, and director of numerous religious plays, dinner theater fundraisers, and "The Carollers."

Her passion for theater lead to her co-founding the Fulton County Playhouse where her acting, directing, and backstage talents were developed, polished, and shared with the community's youth and adults. She also performed in Spoon River College's theater productions and, most recently, Many Lights Theatre productions.

Her other passions were writing, history and reading.

A funeral service will be held on Friday October 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home, where visitation will be held the night before on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 5 until 7 p.m.

Burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church.

Hanna City – Robbie S. (Rogers) Goodwin, 73, of Hanna City, formerly of Princeville, passed away at 1:20 AM on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at her residence. She was born on February 10, 1945 in TN to Woodrow and Grace (Bailey) Rogers. She married Ron Goodwin on December 29, 1987 in Peoria, IL, he survives.

Also surviving is one son, Bryan (Michelle) Van Laningham of Princeville; two stepchildren, Kristina (Stan) Halter of Germantown Hills and Timothy (Debra) Goodwin; five grandchildren, Austin, Brandon, Josh, Jacie, Aulexandria; one brother; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Robbie was preceded in death by her parents.

Robbie retired from Hiram Walkers, worked as a TSA, and also worked as a bailiff for Peoria County. She was a member of the American Legion Post 974 in Bartonville, IL. Robbie participated in the walk for the cure for the past 18 years. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Louisa E. Pilkington


Smithfield- Louisa E. Pilkington, 96, formerly of Smithfield, passed away at 6:50 PM Tuesday October 9, 2018 at Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba.

She was born March 13, 1922 at Cambridge, England the daughter of William V. and Elizabeth (Gray) Jaggers. She married Francis D. Pilkington on March 24, 1945. He preceded her in death on February 11, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ted, and one sister, Lillian. Survivors include two sons, John (Patricia) Pilkington of Crawfordville, FL; Victor (Marianne) Pilkington of St. David, one daughter, Kathy (Glen) Ensinger of Smithfield, six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.

Louisa lived in Larne, Ireland during her younger years where she met her husband Francis during WW 2. She was a member of the Smithfield Nazarene Church where she sang in the church choir and taught Bible school. She was a Cub Scout leader and den mother, and had also served as president of the Smithfield PTA. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and playing cards, and had been very involved in activities at the Red Brick School.

Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba, with Reverend Dean Potts officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Dennis L. Vannoy


Fairview – Dennis L. Vannoy, 74, of Fairview, passed away at 10:07 am Sunday, October 7, 2018 at his residence.  He was born on April 7, 1944 in Union, IL. to Murton and Dorothy Vannoy.  He married Angel Lock and she preceded him in death.  He then married Jackie Dilts and she also preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Vannoy and sister Judy Smith.
Surviving are thirteen children; Andrew Vannoy, Jamie Vannoy, Dorothea Carr, Jimmy Vannoy, Dennis Vannoy Jr, Gene Vannoy, Tim Vannoy, Tom Vannoy, Brian Vannoy, Jay Vannoy, Kevin Vannoy, Caleb Vannoy, and Christine Ingram, step daughter Latisha Andrews and fourteen grandchildren.
Dennis was an Army veteran and was a truck driver.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday October 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A burial will be held at Ellisville cemetery on Saturday October 20, 2018 at 12 noon.

Sylvia V. (Mustered) Jacobs, 106 of Hamburg, New York and formerly of Lewistown, IL; passed away Tuesday September 25, 2018 at Absolute Care in Orchard Park, NY.

She was born September 4, 1912 in Lewistown, IL; the daughter of Charles Andrew and Elizabeth (Hughes) Mustered. She married Roy Jacobs on August 1, 1931 in Crown Point, IN. Roy Jacobs died January 4, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Elena Wood, four brothers, and three sisters and a grandson, Dean Sheets.    Surviving are two children, Harry (Kay) Jacobs of Hamburg, NY and Joyce (Ken) Jones of Galesburg, IL; Eight grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

Sylvia worked at Sears and Roebuck ; Newmann’s Men Store; and the Berean Book Store.  She also completed a course at Dale Carnegie.  Sylvia was a member and former chairperson of the Wee-ma-Tuk ladies golf association and also a member of the Ladies Missionary Circle at First Baptist Church.   She also took up painting in her 70’s and a talent was born late in life.

Sylvia was a faithful Christ follower, attending Church services wherever life took her.  She spent her whole life serving the Lord and others through her works, thoughts and prayers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Lewistown. Charles F. Shawgo


St. David – Charles F. Shawgo, 85, of St. David passed away at 5:13 pm Thursday, October 4, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.  He was born on November 4, 1932 in Summum, IL. to George and Cora (Beatty) Shawgo.  Charles married Rosalie Shawgo on May 25, 1985 in Canton.  She survives along with three children; Kevin (Sheila) Shawgo of Canton, Cynthia (Randy) Myers of Canton and Brian (Janice) Shawgo of Breeds, four step-children; William E. DeGroot of Canton, Lisa (John) McKeever of Canton, the late Brian (Kim) DeGroot of Fiatt, and Alan DeGroot of Poplar Bluff, MO, two sisters; Wilma Long of Canton and Thelma Starcevich of Canton, three grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and four step great-grandchildren Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers; Delbert Shawgo and Keith Shawgo, and two sisters Lela Shaw and Nelda Brush.
Charles was a member of Church of Brethren in Canton and the Fulton County Saddle Club.  He worked as a machinist at Caterpillar for 30 years in East Peoria and Mossville.  He also farmed.  Charles was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

John Conrad

Canton-John Conrad, 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Heartland Health Care in Canton.
He was born on November 1, 1940 in Canton to Paul and Mary (O'Rourke) Conrad. They preceded him in death.
He married Margaret Day in Cuba. She preceded him in death on August 13, 2018.
Surviving are his children, Chris (Bob) Beaty of Canton, Debra Beaird of Canton, Richard Ball of Banner, one brother, Lawrence Conrad of Macomb, one sister, Diana Craig of Canton, seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
John retired from International Harvester in Canton.
Most of all John loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Mary L. Stephens


Canton – God has called Mary L. Stephens, 81, of Canton, to come home to be with his angels on Monday, October 1, 2018. Mary was the daughter of Denver and Jennie (Deacon) Fuller. She was born near Macon, MO on September 25, 1937.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Yolanda (Richard) Kelley; grandsons, Michael (Stephanie) Kelley and Aaron (Helen) Kelley; sister, Janell (Richard) Wilkinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allan Stephens in 2005; sisters, Charlotte (Ron) Pauley and Betty (George) Coureton; her brother, Rex Fuller; and her son, Wendell Demery.

Mary graduated from Canton Senior High in 1955 and attended High Fashion Beauty College. She worked as a nurse’s assistant at Bartonville State Hospital and Canton Graham Hospital. Mary moved to Washington, IA in 1976 and married Richard A. Stephens on May 27, 1977 in Crawfordsville, IA and lived in Washington, IA until 2010 when she moved back to Canton, IL. She was a member of Ainsworth Community Church of Iowa and attends Shields Chapel Community Church in Canton.

Services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, IL. Pastor David Meader will officiate. Burial will follow at Ainsworth Cemetery in Ainsworth, IA at 3:00 PM. Pastor Jason Collier will officiate the committal service. Barbara Parker

Farmington-Barbara C. Parker, 93, formerly of Table Grove, passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at her residence.
She was born on September 23, 1925 in Table Grove to Ernest Lee and Nellie Mae (Henderson) Saville.  They preceded her in death.
She married Gerald Eugene Nunn in 1944.  She later married Duane Parker in 1982.  He also preceded her in death.
Surviving are her children, Alberta (Mark) Jones of Farmington, Barbara (the late Larry) Woodcock of Marion, IL, Roy Nunn, ten grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and her daughter-in-law Mary Ann Nunn.
Also preceding her in death is one son Larry Nunn, two brothers and one sister.
Barbara retired from Graham Hospital after 23 years as a nurse.  She later retired from NTN Bowers and lastly she worked for 6 years at HyVee in Macomb as a greeter.  She was a member of Shields Chapel Church and was an avid NASCAR fan.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Macomb.  Ther will be no visitation.

Jack D. Winston


Jack D. Winston, 86, of Rushville, IL, passed away at 4:50 pm on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. He was born on July 14, 1932 in Sheldons Grove, IL, the son of Edward and Dorothy (Workman) Winston. Jack married Betty Weishaar on April 21, 1951 in Beardstown, IL. Betty preceded Jack in death on August 22, 2018.

Also preceding Jack in death are his 2 brothers, Junior and John “Bill” Winston, and sister, Beverly Burgard.

Surviving are his 2 daughters, Nancy Winston of Rushville and Christy (and John) Chubick of Bloomington, IL, 3 grandchildren, Shelly Toland, Jennifer (and Dave) Ziemer, and Kayla (and Josh) Smith, and 4 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Olivia, Coralynn, and Calvin.

Jack was a farmer for 56 years. He was a tinker and especially enjoyed working on clocks.

services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Pastor Charla Meyers will be officiating. Marc P. Hess


Bryant- Marc P. Hess, 71, of Bryant, passed away at 10:55 PM Sunday September 30, 2018 at his home.

He was born December 1, 1946 at Canton, the son of Marc W. and Mildred I. (Pittman) Hess. He married Vickie L. Estes on July 15, 1967 at Lewistown. She survives with two sons, Marc E. (LeighAnn) Hess of Lewistown, and Brett Hess of Bryant, two grandsons, Robbie and John Ross Hess both of Lewistown, two sisters, Marcy Havens of Lewistown, and Sandra (Ken)  Ringhouse of Easton, and his mother in-law, Geneive Slater of Bryant. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marc farmed many years before retiring. He was currently serving as the Buckheart Twp. Road Commissioner, and also worked for the Village of Bryant. He was an Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1, and the Fulton County Farm Bureau. He raced boats for 18 years and was a member of the St. Louis Drag Boat Association. He had served on the Lewistown Grade School Board where he had also served as president of the board.

A visitation will be held Thursday from 12 Noon until 1:45 PM at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Oak Hill Cemetery with Reverend Bruce Rushing officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Lewistown VFW Post 5001 and American Legion Bishop Post 1. Betty Conrad


Canton-Betty Jane Conrad died September 27, 2018. She was born July 16, 1924, in Joliet, Illinois, to Mildred (Nahlbom) and Michael Green. She married Beryl Gilbert Conrad in Canton, Illinois, on June 20, 1954. Her husband died in 1992, and her parents died in 1995. Her sister Virginia Cassem, stepson Beryl Glenn Conrad, step-granddaughter Deborah Wing, and great-grandson Jude Williams also preceded her in death.

Surviving are three daughters: Colleen Conrad, Michelle (Donald) Gorsage, and Mildred Conrad, all of Canton, Illinois. Her step-daughter Sharon Bell also survives her. In addition, three granddaughters survive her: Melissa (Justin) Williams, Sarah (Lawrence) Clark, and Noelle Conrad. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren (Madison, Greg, Haley, Chandler, Trey, Amelia, Ruebynn), six step-grandchildren, and several step-great-grandchildren.

Betty graduated from Lockport High School. After her husband’s death, she went to college, graduating with honors and an associate’s degree in art from Spoon River College. She served in the Navy WAVES during WWII and later in the Navy Reserves. Stationed in Washington, D.C., she met Presidents, members of Congress, and military officers. As a WAVE, she marched behind President Franklin Roosevelt’s caisson in his funeral procession. Betty also was employed as an artist, bookkeeper, and secretary.

Mrs. Conrad wrote essays for local publications and talked to Canton High School students about WWII every year on Pearl Harbor Day. Acting was one of her hobbies, and she was a memorable Mammy Yokum at the Fulton County Playhouse. She belonged to the American Legion and the Spoon River College Honor Society. When her daughters were young, she was a Camp Fire, 4H, and Great Books leader. In addition to being a PTA member, she was a strong believer in education. She marched for the Equal Rights Amendment and wrote to politicians to advocate for women. She was a life-long Democrat. Up until the last few years of her life, she went to church every Sunday and sang in various church choirs. Finally, she was a woman who loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally.

A visitation will be held on Monday October 1, 2018 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton where a funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 11 a.m.  Rev. Micah Garnett will officiate.

Burial with military rites will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Memorials may be made to Canton American Legion Auxiliary (Girls State) or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Judith Anderson


Canton-Judith A. “Judy” Anderson, 73, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at OSF St. Francis in Peoria.

She was born on July 7, 1945 in Canton to Harold and Deloris (Silverstein) Gibson.  They preceded her in death.

She married John W. Anderson on June 30, 2007 in Canton.  He preceded her in death on August 31, 2011.

Surviving are two children, Steve (Raynee) Kessler of Canton, Alison (Josh) Strom of Plymouth, MN, four grandchildren, Matthew and Grant Kessler, Maxwell and Charlotte Strom, one sister, Deanna Stambaugh and one brother Dean Gibson.

Judy retired from the Canton Park District in 2011.  She was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton where she taught Sunday school.  She was the tresurer of the Veteran’s Memorial at Lakeland Park.  Judy enjoyed taking pictures, traveling, reading, and being active in the outdoors.  Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 11 am, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton with a visitation one hour prior at the church.

Burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

Oaks-Hines Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
