Willard E. “Bill” Nelson


Canton- Willard “Bill” Nelson, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2015 in Windermere, FL.  He was born in Canton, IL to Rose and Marion L. Nelson.
Bill graduated from Canton High School in 1970 and from Eastern Illinois University in 1974.  That year, he married Linda Loftin of Fairfield, IL.  They moved to Florida in 1977.
Bill worked for Lockheed Martin for 38 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory mother Rose Nelson; children, son Derek, daughter Emily and their mother Linda; brothers Jerry and Jeffery and grandson Zealand Willard.  A memorial service was held at the First Baptist of Windermere on Thursday July 30, 2015 at 4:00 pm followed by a reception at Windermere Town Hall.
A burial of the ashes will be at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.  A celebration of Life will be held on August 9th, at 4 pm, at the Canton Elks Lodge.  Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of local arrangements.

Joyce A. Ziegenhorn


Smithfield- Joyce A. Ziegenhorn, 73, of Smithfield, passed away at 245 PM Monday July 27, 2015 at her home.

She was born March 11, 1942 at Lewistown, the daughter of Paul and Betty (Herrick) Brush. Surviving are three sons, Bill (Connie) Clelland, Rod Clelland of Galesburg, and Danny Ziegenhorn of Lewistown, one daughter, Libby Flannery of Branson, MO; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one brother, Ed Brush of Orman Beach, FL; and one sister, Nancy (Dick) Wilson of Smithfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one great grandchild.

Joyce worked at various nursing homes in the area as a LPN before retiring. She was a 30 years breast cancer survivor and was a supporter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and other breast cancer associations. She enjoyed crocheting, her cats, and her once a month reunion with friends and cousins.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Reverend Sue Roat officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services and burial will be in Baughman Cemetery at rural Smithfield. Dorothy Masterson


Canton – Dorothy P. Masterson, 97, of Canton, formerly of Mt. Sterling, died at 12:55 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at Renaissance Care Center in Canton.
She was born April 23, 1918, in Isabel Township to Zach C. and Gusta (White) Jackson.  She graduated from Lewistown High School with the class of 1936, and was then employed by Blue Bell Globe Mfg. Co. in Abingdon.
She married James “Ike” Masterson in Galesburg on May 29, 1940.  He preceded her in death on September 30, 1985.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan (Michael) Larson of Canton; two granddaughters, Carisa (Jake) Bryant and Heather Larson; and three great-grandchildren, Kayden, Hailey, and Madison.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, six sisters, four nephews, and one niece.
Dorothy, her husband and partner, and Kenneth Bultemeier, owned and operated the Roseville Furniture and Appliance store in Roseville for several years.  In March of 1953, she opened the Tastee Freez Drive-In located in Mt. Sterling, later changing the name to the Tastee Treat Drive-In.
The family moved to Mt. Sterling in January of 1958, and operated the drive-in for 30 years, retiring from the business in 1983.
Dorothy was a member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Sterling where she sang in the choir for many years.  She was also a dual member of First Christian Church in Naples, FL, where she had been a winter resident since the death of her husband.
She was also a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the National T.T.T. Society.  She promoted the organization of the Mt. Sterling T.T.T. Chapter in the year of 1961.  She was also a member of Rolling Greens Golf Club.
Dorothy was a sports enthusiast and was among the first women to participate in the sport of trapshooting in Illinois.  She joined her husband and friends for many years for fishing on Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada.  She also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and watching the Cubs play baseball.  She enjoyed traveling, having visited many foreign countries including Africa, Greece, Turkey, Norway, and England.  She was also an avid bridge player.
Cremation rites have been accorded and no services will be held at this time.  Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Shirlene J. Jockisch


Lewistown- Shirlene J. Jockisch, 75, of Lewistown, passed away at 3:41 AM Sunday July 26, 2015 at OSF St Francis Medical Center.

She was born August 23, 1939 at Steubenville, OH; the daughter of Loman A. and Effie Marie (Mehollin) Roe. She married Lee W Jockisch on July 15, 1961 at Lewistown. He preceded her on December 21, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and one great nephew, Tom Roe. Surviving is one daughter, Susie(Robert)Adams of rural Lewistown, two sons, Tom Jockisch of rural Lewistown, and Scott (Angela Whitman) Jockisch of rural Lewistown, three grandchildren, Sarah Adams and Jon Stiltz of St. David, Jessica Adams and Knute Miller of Lewistown, and Justin Adams of Lewistown, five great grandchildren, Lexy and Peyton Hampton, Owen Stiltz, and Elzie and Lynlee Miller, one brother, Richard “Dick”  (Norman) Roe of Lewistown,  one nephew, Rich Roe of Bushnell, and a very dear friend, Lorraine Hinds.

Shirlene was a homemaker and had also worked as a teller at the former Lewistown Bank. She was a member of the Lewistown united Methodist Church. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed making sequined calendars every year for Christmas presents. She spent her life always thinking of others first. She prided herself on taking care of her husband the last few months of his life until he passed. She undoubtedly will be greatly missed by all.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Henry-Lange Memorial home in Lewistown where visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Wilma Sturgeon


Wilma Serelia (Corwell) Sturgeon, 97 of Canton passed away at 9:30 AM Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Sunset Nursing Home in Canton.  She was born on October 20, 1917 in Harrisburg, IL. to William and Leah (Lindsey) Corwell.  Wilma married Don Sturgeon on September 9, 1947 in Canton.  He preceded her in death on October 25, 2001.  Also preceding her were her parents and 2 sisters; Billie Lee McCaskey and an infant. Surviving is several cousins and friends.
Wilma worked for the Fulton County Health Department as a Public Health Nurse from 1946-1980.  She was the Health Officer for 7 years from 1961-1968.  She was a member of First Congregational Church of Christ in Canton.  Wilma graduated from Canton High School and St. John’s Nursing School in Springfield.
Services will be 2:15 PM Tuesday, July 28th; Graveside in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton with the Rev. John Thompson


Glasford – John R. Thompson, 81, of Glasford died at 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at his home.
He was born August 21, 1933, in Monmouth to Carl J. and Helen L. (McLaughlin) Thompson.  He married Dixie D. Dunham on December 6, 1980, in Canton.  She survives.
Also surviving are five children, Lori (Randy) Mayberry of CA, Mike (Mary) Thompson of Alexis, Bill Thompson of Lemont, Kathie Thompson-Fulton of CA, and Shane Thompson of Glasford; one sister, Janet (Darrell) Russell of NM; four grandchildren, Lindsey Fulton, Carl Thompson, Breanna Thompson, and Jalen Worley; two nephews, Jon and Mark Johnson; and one niece, Jane Cruz.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was a 1955 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and began his teaching career at Spoon River Valley.  In 1957, he took the position at Canton Junior High School, where he remained (Ingersoll Middle School) until his retirement in 1989.  John’s bands were renowned across the state, earning Division I ratings at IGSMA State music contest in each of his 32 years.
John was the longest serving band director in Canton history.  He earned his Master of Music Education Degree from VanderCook College of Music, Chicago, in 1962.  He was recognized as a WIU Distinguished Alumni in 1976.
John always found great satisfaction in following his students’ lives beyond their junior high accomplishments, whether they pursued professional music/teaching careers or not.  He supervised countless student teachers and maintained contact over the years, following and supporting their endeavors in any way he could.
Although most know John as a musician, he was also an avid outdoors sportsman.  He enjoyed golf, and recently spent time at the driving range even though he was barely able to stand.  John was an accomplished fly-fisherman who enjoyed the intricate artistry of trying his own flies.  He made trips to Yellowstone National Park as often as circumstances allowed.  In his retirement, John raised Angus cattle, particularly show calves for youngsters, and was an active member of the Lamoine Valley Angus Association and the Illinois Angus Association.  He was a member of the American School Band Directors Association and the Canton First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday evening, July 25, 2015, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.  A memorial service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, where visitation will be held one hour prior to services.  Burial of ashes will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday morning at the Alexis Cemetery in Alexis, IL.

Jeffery R. “JR” Watson

 Jeffery R. “JR” Watson, 58, of Canton passed away at 8:16 PM Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Mason District Hospital in Havana. JR was born May 15, 1957 in Canton to Roy and Margaret (Purvis) Watson. Surviving are his parents of Memphis, MO, 3 children; Jenny Lynn Oaks , Trinity Marie Watson, and Cory R.C. Watson all of Canton, 3 grandchildren; Ian Oaks, Raya Sunshine Reading, and Reese Watson, a brother Terry (Debbie) Watson of Canton, and a husband-in-law Gary (Billie Jo) Kinsel of Canton. A brother Tony Watson preceded him in death.
JR owned and operated JR auto repair. He also worked for Caterpillar for over 30 years as a plant supervisor. He loved motorcycles, trips to Missouri, hanging out at Brew N Cue, loved his family and friends, and father to many.
Services will be 6PM Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton where visitation will be from 3-6 PM. Cremation rites will be accorded following services. Laurene Mae Loveland-Kuhn


Canton – LauRene Mae Loveland Kuhn, 91, of Hamilton, formerly of Canton, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA.
She was born on April 1, 1924 in Farmington, IL to Charles and Lena Shaver Myers.
She married Willis Loveland on February 12, 1945, he preceded her in death in 1980.  She later married Glenn Kuhn.  He preceded her in death in 1989.
Surviving is her daughter Deanna Loveland Ray Jeffrey of Hamilton, grandchildren, Angela (Donnie) Ray Jones of Keokuk, IA, Alicia (Ryan) Ray Smith of Keokuk, IA, step grandson Bryan (Rebecca) Jeffrey of Bradenton, FL, eleven great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Betty Myers of Liverpool and Winnie Petty of Ark.  She also has four step sisters.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers Frank and Bill Myers and her step father Glen Edwards.
LauRene worked at Camp Ellis during the war and later was a beautician in Canton for many years.  She was a member of the 1st Christian Church in Canton and was involved in the John Keets Foundation.  She enjoyed dancing often attending the Canton Moose and Elks Lodges.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 11 am, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with a visitation one hour prior at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

 Debra J. Frazier, 62, of Canton passed away at 7:25 AM Sunday, July 19, 2015 at the Graham Hospital.  She was born on July 28, 1952 in Springfield, IL. to Junior and Janet I. (Scroggins) Denning 1st.  Debra is survived by 2 brothers; James Denning of Canton, and Perry (Tammie) Denning of Farmington, 2 sisters; Mary Revelle of Decatur, and Rose Butler of Dallas, TX, 3 half sisters and 1 half brother.  Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother Junior Denning 2nd.

Marilyn L. Waller

Lewistown-  Marilyn L. Waller, 84, of Lewistown passed away at 6:30 AM Sunday July 19, 2015 at Clayberg Nursing Center in Cuba.

She was born October 21, 1930 at rural Havana, the daughter of John H. and Geneda (Welker) Meyer. She married Clinton H. “Bud” Waller on October 11, 1948 at Havana. He died July 18, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters. Surviving are one son, John (Susie) Waller of Acworth, GA; two grandchildren, John Randy Waller of Canton, GA; and Julie Ann Chism of Acworth, GA; four great grandchildren, Brandon, Kelsey, Emma, and Austin, one great great grandchild Brandon Jr., three sisters, Donna Chapman of Canton, Harriet (Dick) Baldwin of Smithfield, and Bonnie (Roy) Jones of Macomb.

Marilyn was a homemaker and had also worked at Brannon Cleaners, the former Clarytona Nursing Home, and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Illinois Street Christian Church and the Lewistown American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Marilyn enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren she also enjoyed knitting, and collecting frog figurine’s. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday July 23rd at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Reverend Bob Miner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Lewistown. Dean P. King


Canton- Dean P. King, 88, of Canton, passed away at 4:00 PM Friday, July 17, 2015 at Unity Point Health Methodist, Peoria.

He was born in Canton on July 13, 1927 to George R. and Elsie (Kruzan) King.  He was joined in marriage to Carol Joann Henderson on January 21, 1949 in Canton.  She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Michael P. (Diana) King of Venice, CA, and Darcy Reynolds of Lewistown; two grandsons, Jason (Julie) Pollitt and Dustin (Jennie) Pollitt; and five great grandchildren, Brock, Abby, Kali, Tanner, and Dawsyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Charles; and one sister, Melba.

He served in the United States Navy during WWII.

Dean was a painter in Peoria for Local #157.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Cremation rites have been accorded.  Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton is in charge of arrangements.  A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, July 24, 2015 at Greenwood Cemetery, Canton.  Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate.

Memberships: Charter member of the Berean Christian Church in Ipava.  She also attended the Woodland Church of the Brethren, the Ipava Christian Church and the Astoria Christian Church and was currently a member of the Maple Avenue Christian Church in Macomb.  She was a member of the Ipava and Astoria American Legion Auxiliary since the 1940’s.  She was a founder of the Bernadotte Public Park, a founding member of the Rushville Rushettes Women’s Fast Pitch Softball team, a member of the American Arts Association, Rushville Golf League, Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Golf Club, Lakeland City Country Club in Lakeland, FL, Western Illinois Tuesday Morning League, Pythian Sisters Lodge, Charter member of the Astoria Saddle Club, World Vision of India, and AARP.
    She donated to the Lewistown Fulton County Museum 24 antique pieces of the Bob Walters family.  Barbara did paintings of Christ for 10 community churches.  She was an amateur artist and won many awards, including past Grand Champion of the Fulton County Art Show.  She loved animals and sports, but especially loved her family.

Zelta K. Joachim


Bartonville- Zelta K. Joachim, 87, formerly of Bartonville, passed away at 9:39 PM Wednesday July 15, 2015 at Grandview Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Peoria where she was a resident.

She was born January 9, 1928 at Smithfield the daughter of Vernon and Mary (Wilhelm) Hart. She married Dawson W. Joachim on September 1, 1948 at East Peoria. He died August 31, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, and two brothers. Surviving are one son, David (Rhonda Wolfe) Joachim of Peoria, one daughter, Kathy (Jay) Schauwecker of Rockwall, TX; two grandchildren, Jennifer Back of Rockwall, TX; and Andrew (Leigh) Schauwecker of Temecula, CA; and seven great grandchildren.

Zelta was an administrative assistant and had worked for Toledo Scales, Limestone High School, Commercial Bank, and Peoria School of Medicine. She was a member of the Bartonville United Methodist Church where she served as secretary for the administrative council as well as visiting shut ins.  Zelta enjoyed reading, walking, and gardening.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday July 20th at the Bartonville United Methodist Church with Pastor Nick Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Baughman Cemetery at rural Smithfield at 1:15 PM Monday. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Randy Jones

St. David – Randy N. “Dinger” Jones, 60, of St. David died at 11:08 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at his home.
He was born April 23, 1955, in Watertown, NY to Gerald and Lucy (Ingerson) Jones.  He married Phyllis Fouts on February 16, 1984, in Lewistown.  She survives.
Also surviving are his mother; three children, Shaisha Fouts of Canton, Jared Jones of Godfrey, and Virginia Jones of Moline; one sister, Terry Jones; one half-sister, Liz Kaiser; two half-brothers, John and Jody Peterson; and five grandchildren.
Randy had worked as a roofer prior to his illness and enjoyed fishing.
Cremation rites have been accorded.  There will be no services.

Nancy Taylor


Canton – Nancy L. Taylor, 69, of Canton died at 1:14 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born March 30, 1946, in Canton to Paul and Mary Conrad.
She is survived by her two children, Bryan (Jennifer) Taylor and Tracy (Shane) Schmidt, both of St. David; two brothers, John (Peggy) Conrad of Canton and Lawrence Conrad of Macomb; one sister, Dianna Craig of Canton; and three grandchildren, Baylie Snyder and Austin and Devin Taylor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William “Bill” Conrad; and one sister, Carolyn Salsmon.
Nancy worked in maintenance for Central Illinois Light Company (CILCO), at their Duck Creek Station, retiring in 1999.  She also volunteered at the Fulton County Humane Society and attended the Canton Assembly of God.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.  Cremation rites will be accorded following services, with burial of ashes at Greenwood Cemetery in Canton at a later date.

Hilda Negley


Fairview – Hilda I. Negley, 91, of Fairview, died at 3:53 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Graham Hospital in Canton.
She was born November 21, 1923, to Carl and Edna (Ford) Mulica.  She married James J. Negley on August 20, 1955, in Canton.  He preceded her in death on November 5, 2007.
She is survived by four children, Nancy (Steve) Brodbeck of Decatur, Tim (Carolyn) Negley of Fairview, Carl (Sheryl) Negley of Tyler, TX, and Norma St. Clair of Canton; one sister, Carol Unger of Knoxville; eleven grandchildren; Jake Brodbeck, John Brodbeck, Amy Mayall, Lisa Quick, Adam Johnson, Taylor Negley, Trenton Negley, Kendall Negley, Carrie Black, Adam St. Clair, and Alison St. Clair; and twelve great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is her son-in-law, Doug St. Clair.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.
Hilda was an elementary school teacher in the Fulton County School Systems and had a lifelong love of learning.  She was a 50-year member of the Fulton County Home Extension Association, the Fulton County Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Fairview Women’s Club, and a member of the Fairview American Legion Auxiliary.  She wa a member of the Fairview Reformed Church and later attended the Fiatt Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 3-5 p.m.  Burial will be at Fairview Township Cemetery.

Gerald Postin


Gerald L. Postin, 63, of Canton passed away at 9:55 am Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at his residence.  He was born on December 25, 1951 in Canton to Clifford and Evelyn (Reed) Postin.  Gerald married Leslie Duffield on February 8, 2003.  She survives along with his dad Clifford Postin, 4 children; Teresa (Craig) Newby-McGinnis, Tammey (Brad) DeVries, Tonya (Jim) McPhail, and Timothy (Janelle) Postin, 3 step-children; Jesse (Fawn) Lockwood, Michelle Lockwood (Chris Ebbert), and Thomas (Lisa) Lockwood, 19 grandchildren; Abigail, Matthew, Thomas, Steven, Elyssa, Cameron, Kelsey, Kamen, Blake, Addison, Colin, Ariana, Evan, Lily, Brodie, Breven, Taylor, Dylan, and Alexis, a sister Dianna (Marion) Harper, and 2 nieces; April (Jason) Fleisher, and Anna (Josh) Bundy.
Gerald worked at Caterpillar for over 42 years most recently as a heavy equipment operator.  He was a member of Southeast Iowa Pigeon Club, Ducks Unlimited, loved fishing, hunting, and his family.  Gerald was a history buff especially his family’s history.
Services will be 3 pm Sunday, July 19 at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton where visitation will be 2 hours prior to services.  The Rev. Tracy Roberson

Canton-Tracy J. Roberson, 57, of Canton, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015, at 7:05 am, at her residence.
She was born on February 27, 1958, to Trilby and Sara Kathryn (Barron) Whited.
Surviving are her husband Raymond, daughter Heather (Steve) Roberson of Canton; Granddaughter River; Sister, Tana (Ron) Hambly of Plainfield; her mother in law, Dorothy Roberson and many cousins, nieces, nephews and in laws.  She married Raymond C. Roberson on April 7, 1984 in Plainfield, IL.
She was preceded in death by two brothers Terry and Tim.
Tracy worked at and attended Evangelical Free Church in Canton.  She was blessed with artistic talent and enjoyed drawing, painting, cake decorating, knitting and ceramics.
A Celebration of Tracy’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at 2 pm, at the Evangelical Church in Canton.  The family will receive friends following the service with a time of food and fellowship.

Gale M. Motsinger


Gale M. Motsinger, 84, of Canton passed away at 6:37 pm Sunday, July 12 at the Graham Hospital in Canton.  He was born on February 6, 1931 in Canton to Russell and Lucille (Hummel) Motsinger.  Gale married Virginia Jeanne Wages on May 10, 1950 in Canton.  They recently celebrated their 65th  Wedding Anniversary.  She survives along with 6 children; Jan (Debbie) Motsinger of Canton, Robert J. Motsinger of Van Nuys, CA, Gerald “Gale” (Debbie) Motsinger of Bartonville, Randy (Kim) Motsinger of St. David, Sheila (Steve) Bottoms of Middletown, IL, and Michael Motsinger of Lewistown, 9 grandchildren; Carrie Schreiner, Stacey Watters, Donna Grant, Jeff Newlun, Ryan Motsinger, Alex Motsinger, Kurt Motsinger, Kyle Motsinger, and Eric Dennis, 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren  and a brother Roger (Janet) Motsinger of Clinton, IL.
Gale worked at Caterpillar as an Inspector for 34 ½ years retiring in 1995.  He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton, Shriners Consistory, Past Master of Lewistown Masonic Lodge #104, loved woodworking, fishing, camping, and was an avid Cardinals fan.
Services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, July 16, at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton where visitation will be 1 hour and 45 minutes prior to services.  The grandson Rev. Johnnie Dorich


Canton – Johnnie Dorich, 98, of Canton passed away on July 12, 2015 at his home, Red Oak Estates.  He was born John Dorich in Dunfermline on May 27, 1917 to Joseph and Josephine (Tomljanovich) Dorich.  He married Arlene Wright on December 14, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri.  She passed away on November 28, 1992.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers Matt, Frank, and Junior; sister Theresa; son Frank; great granddaughter Caitlin Snow.
Surviving are his daughter, Trudy (Larry) Williams of Canton; his granddaughters Franki (Jeremy) Ruck of Canton; Jennifer (Nick) Dorich-Vespa of Zionsville, IN; Stephanie (Dave) Snow of Virden; Great Grandchildren Alex Ruck; Sydney, Drew, Ryan and Charlie Vespa; Jenna and Abby Snow; nieces, nephews, great nephews; great neices and great great and nephews and nieces.
Johnnie served his country twice- first as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Illini in Marseilles, Illinois completing his “tour of duty” on September 3, 1935.  He later entered the Army, leaving from the Lewistown Post Office, on March 13, 1941.  He was honorably discharged on April 3, 1944.
He was a 78 year member in good standing of the United Mine Workers of America.  He retired from Buckheart Mine #17 in 1981.  In the 1970’s, he worked for the International UMWA as Safety Coordinator, Surface Mines, District 12.  He co-authored many safety regulations which protected strip miner’s lives.
Johnnie was 73 year member and life member of the American Legion Post #17 in Ipava.  He was a 63 year member and life member of the Morning Star Lodge #734 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria.
He was Catholic who interpreted his faith in his own fashion all of his life.
Those who knew him well will remember his love for his wife and family, fast cars, a good argument and the Cardinals winning.
His family would like to thank the staff and residents at Red Oak Estates for so enriching his life these last years.
Dad said to me, “Don’t cry for long.  I’ve had a good life and I have no regrets.”
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in St David.  A visitation will be held one hour prior at the Church.  Burial, with military honors, will be held at the White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Ronnie Johnson


Canton – Ronald A. “Ronnie” Johnson, 81, of Canton died at 12:25 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at Renaissance Care Center in Canton.
He was born June 23, 1934, in Canton to Arista and Gladys (Ethell) Johnson.  He married Joyce L. Kinsel on May 1, 1978, in Canton.  She survives.
Also surviving are four children, Kelly (David) Johnson Menne of Texas, Lyle (Ronda) Harris of Williamsfield, Stephen (Lori) Harris of Canton, and Kyle (Candy) Harris of Dunfermline; two brothers, Gary (Leigh Ann) Johnson and Dick (Cindy) Johnson, both of Lewistown; one sister, Doneita (Glenn) Werry of Farmington; nine grandchildren, Josh, Kristina, Erin, Paige, Jacob, Zachary, Billy, Carrie, and Kaitara; and his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Scott Johnson; and one brother, Jerry Johnson.
Ronnie was a coal miner for Freeman United, retiring from the Buckheart Mine in 1985.  Following his retirement, he worked for many years as a shop mechanic for Star Delivery & Transfer and farming.  Ronnie enjoyed the outdoors and the time that he spent at the family farm.  He was a skilled wood carver and enjoyed deer hunting in his younger days.  He was a member of Shields Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, with Rev. Wally Carson officiating.  Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Shields Chapel Cemetery in rural Canton.

Bob Jester


Canton – Robert L. “Bob” Jester, 92, of Canton passed away at 7:58 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Heartland Healthcare Center in Canton.
He was born January 30, 1923, in Oakland, to Charles and Effie (Allison) Jester.  He married Normal L. Diveley on February 3, 1946 in Peoria.  She preceded him in death on June 25, 2011.
He is survived by four daughters, Sandy (the late Chuck) Harris of Trivoli, Charlotte A. (Timothy) Kalb of Princeville, Nadine Jester of Burlington, IA, and Connie (Rex Morris) Noble of Burlington, IA; one sister, Doris Lange of East Peoria; six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Button; eight brothers and two sisters.
Bob was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, serving his country during World War II.  He worked as a truck driver for Pitman Trucking in Bartonville for 32 years and later retired from Dolan Trucking in Peoria in 1985.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tinkering with cars.  He was a lifetime-member of the Amvets Post #169 in North Pekin and a member of the Teamsters Local #627.
Cremation rites have been accorded.  Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.  Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Canton – Crystal D. Harrison, 50, of Canton died at 1:04 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at her home.
She was born September 20, 1964, in Canton, to Woodrow and Sonja Moss.
She is survived by her mother, of Canton; her father, of Bryant; her two daughters, Danielle (Zach) Wright of Cuba and Joey (Brody Roberts) Harrison of Lewistown, and their father, Joseph Harrison; maternal grandmother, Donna Gilmore of Canton; her longtime boyfriend, David McGinnis of Canton; one brother, Randol Moss of Canton; two sisters, Cynthia Valley of Smithfield and April Moss of Industry; three grandchildren, Haleigh Roberts, Peighton Roberts, and Eli Wright (her fourth grandchild is due in December); three nieces; one nephew; one great-niece; and her beloved dog, Scruffy.
Crystal was a homemaker. She enjoyed painting, wood burning, and crafting.

Willis Brown


Canton – Willis W. Brown, 91, of Canton died at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at his home.
He was born September 9, 1923, in Canton, to John E. and Della L. (Woodcock) Brown.  He married Mary Virginia Halley on November 28, 1959, in Moberly, MO.  She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Irene (the late Calvin) Hart of Brereton, Lisa (Bill) Stewart of Dunfermline, and Gina (Gary) Ball of Canton; three step-daughters, Marion Gaye (Marty) Rorer of Texas, Becky (Jack) Eyman of Canton, and Krista (Phil) Sepich of Canton; one brother, Jack (Hazel) Brown of Farmington; 18 grandchildren, Lisa Ford, James “Andy” Hart, Randy Hart, Candi Brooks, Carissa Mendenhall, Jason Stewart, Chelsea Stewart, Trey Simmons, Sydney Simmons, Jacob Ball, Kaleb Ball, Nicole Ball, Nathan Ball, Trisha Crabtree, Kevin Kaiser, Jeremy Eyman, Todd Sepich and Heather Beaty,  many great grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Albert Dean Brown Sr., James Brown, Dick Brown, and Dallas Brown; five sisters, Anna Ewing, Bernita Pinkerton, Velma Bear, Reba Brown, and Bonnie Schiltz, and two grandchildren Tamara McPherson and Corey Kaiser.
Willis was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during World War II.  He worked for International Harvester Co. as a tool crib attendant and machine operator, retiring in 1981, after 40 years of service.
He was a member of the Canton VFW Post #1984, Travelers Protection Association, UAW Retiree’s Club, Congregational Congeniality Club, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton, where he volunteered in the food pantry.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held two hours prior to services. Military honors will be held at the funeral home immediately following services.  Cremation rites will follow services.

Kenneth L. Thompson

 
Canton- Kenneth L. Thompson, 81, of Canton, passed away at 9:08 AM Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at his residence.
Kenneth was born in Astoria on March 20, 1934 to Maurice L.  and Elsie V. (Smith) Thompson.
He first married Shirley A. McClure in Donaldson, IA, July 12, 1952. she preceded him in death on November 22, 2005.  He then married Joyce Green in Lewistown, October 8, 2008. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Debra K. Danner, of Canton; three grandchildren, Cherra (Brian) Hughes, Wes (Nicole) Danner, and Jared Danner; two great-grandchildren, Keifer (Rose) Hughes and Trey Hughes; and three great-great grandchildren; Aubrey Sartin, Jace Hughes, and Gavin Hughes.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenneth Johnson Jr.; and three brothers, Dale, Maurice, and Richard.
He worked at Caterpillar as a welder, retiring after 30 years of service.  He was also a lifelong farmer.
He was a Mason for over 50 years.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, July 13, 2015 at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton. Reverend Jim Menne will officiate.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, July 12, 2015.  Masonic rights will follow the visitation at 7:00 PM.  Burial will be in Fiatt Cemetery, rural Canton.

 Lewistown- John A. Ketcham, 88 of Lewistown, Illinois passed away on July 7, 2015 at Graham Hospital in Canton after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 24, 1927 in Canton, Illinois, the son of Jacob S. and Opal B. Ketcham. He is survived by his wife Charlene of 70 years and two sons, John D. Ketcham of Huntley, Illinois and Michael L. Ketcham of Aurora, Illinois; three grandchildren, John J. Ketcham of Gary, Indiana; Caitlin C. Ketcham of Tucson, Arizona; and Anthony Ketcham of Arizona. Also surviving are a niece Karen Shonkweiler (Larry) of Gridley, Illinois; three nephews, James Higgins (Mary), Eric Higgins (Kathleen), and Michael Higgins all of Manhattan, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

John worked for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad for many years until he retired as Superintendent of Suburban Services, Chicago Region. He was a member of the Illinois Street Christian Church in Lewistown, Illinois where he served as elder. He also served on the Fulton County Board and had been active in the Edgar Lee Masters Ceremonies, the Lewistown High School Alumni Association and was a member of the Historical Society Kendall County, Illinois; and the Masonic Lodge in Galesburg, Illinois. John was a US Navy Veteran serving in WWII.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday July 11, 2015 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown with Pastor Bob Miner officiating.  There will be no visitation. We will miss him very much. A military service will be conducted by the Lewistown VFW Post 5001 and the Lewistown American Legion Bishop Post 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Street Christian Church, the Disabled Veterans of America, or the St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Leona M. Mason


Lewistown- Leona M. Mason, 67 of rural Lewistown passed away at 3:00 PM Saturday July 4, 2015 at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She was born January 25, 1948 at rural Kilbourne, IL; the daughter of Jesse L. and Nile (Newman) Beaver Sr. She married Gary Mason on July 20, 1991 at Havana. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Dawn Taylor, and Chris Taylor both of Lewistown, two step daughters, Tina (Rod) Boggs of Havana, and Joleen (Charles) Hoff of Springfield, one step son, Mike Mason of Springfield, one brother Jesse (DeEtt) Beaver Jr. of Walker, LA; a brother-in-law, Robert Penny of Denham Springs, LA; five grandchildren, Tyler Taylor, Jenna Taylor, Destiny Linnertz, Anthony White, and Kieth Merlenbach, one step granddaughter, Tonya (Eric) Jones, four great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Judy Penny, Joyce DeMott, and Trudy Dupre.

Leona was a homemaker and was also a caregiver at Broadway Arms in Lewistown and in the Fulton County area for many years. She was a member of Waterford Union Church at rural Lewistown. Leona was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday July 8th at the Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown with Pastor Mike Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Waterford Cemetery at rural Lewistown. Gary Thomas Rock


Canton-Gary “Tom” Rock, 56, of Canton passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at his residence.
He was born on August 26, 1958 in Canton to George and Donna Cramer Rock.  They preceded him in death.
Surviving are his brothers, George D. (Diana) Rock of Canton, Mike Rock of Canton, Greg Rock of Canton, sisters Ruth (Roger) Mann of Astoria and Cindy (Robin) Roberts of Bloomington.
He worked for the Local #231 in Pekin.  He also served in the US Army.
Cremation rights have been accorded.  Private services will be held at a later date.

Mildred L. Tomich


Canton – Mildred L. Tomich, 85, of Canton, IL passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Renaissance Care Center, Canton.
She was born August 26, 1929 in Ipava, IL to Gail and Gladys (McCamitt) Beatty.
Mildred married Frank M. Tomich on July 2, 1949 in Canton and he preceded her in death on August 24, 2005.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Antonia Tomlinson; granddaughter, Heather Tomich; and sister, Carol Wade.
Surviving are five children, Rev. Joseph (Rev. Stacy) Tomich of Camp Point, Margaret Tomich, Mark (Vickie) Tomich, Mike (Sandy) Tomich, and Elizabeth Huggins all of Canton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Mildred worked at Graham Hospital in Canton for almost 20 years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton.
She enjoyed quilting and embroidering and was an avid Cubs fan.
Visitation will be from 2:15 to 3:15 PM Thursday, July 2, 2015 Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home, Canton with the recitation of the Rosary at 3:15 PM.
A Funeral Mass will follow at 3:30 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton.
Father Daniel Ebker will officiate.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Canton.
